    Knight Roman was agitated.

    Agitated and terrified.

Last night, after the City Guard boy was taken in by the Necromancer, he discovered a problem with his hand. His right thumb couldn’t straighten normally, nor could it bend properly.

He could live with it not straightening, but being unable to bend it with force was a devastating blow!

    He couldn’t grip his sword!

Knight Roman clenched his right hand repeatedly, only to release it in despair each time. He still held a glimmer of hope that it would recover this morning, and the moment he regained his freedom, Pastor Donald had immediately performed healing on him –

    To no avail.

    It was absolutely useless.

The holy white light descended again and again. Blood rushed, and a warm energy flowed from his arm to his wrist. When he clenched his fist, his right thumb still wouldn’t budge.

In his most terrified moment, Knight Roman recalled the boy’s words when he tried to pour the healing potion:

“You can’t heal this wound like that… Just healing the outside isn’t enough, you need to connect the inside first…”

Why did he say that? What did he know? Was he… intentionally… doing this?

It was all that peasant’s fault!

    All his fault!

Knight Roman hissed. He turned to the apprentice knight standing beside him, his eyes bloodshot:

    “Did you find him yet?”

    “I… I don’t know…”

    “Go find him now!”

The apprentice knight took off running.

How many times had he been sent out? From the moment the Temple sent someone, he had run out so many times! It was just a soldier, the Temple was arresting him, couldn’t they even do that? He was sent running back and forth, his legs were getting skinny…

The young apprentice knight peeked out the side entrance, nothing there. He ran back halfway, a familiar guard saw him running with sweat pouring off his face, he pulled him aside:

“Still looking for him? – He came in through the main entrance!”

    “Huh?”

The young apprentice knight was dumbfounded.

The Temple arresting people, especially those without backing, never went through the main entrance. They would be dragged in through the side entrance, thrown into the dungeon, and when they could see the light of day again would depend on how quickly their family redeemed them, or when the big shots remembered them.

But this time, Gretel was accompanied by the City Guard captain and the War God Temple Bishop. Would they make these two walk through the side entrance?

The Temple messenger said he didn’t want to die, he didn’t want to do such a thing…

Besides, it wasn’t up to him to decide. The bald-headed Bishop strode forward, Knight Nolan followed without hesitation. Gretel walked leisurely behind these two, feeling like he was the fox in the story of the fox and the tiger.

No, more like a resident physician following the chief doctor on rounds!

The Spring Water Goddess Temple wasn’t very large. Compared to the War God Temple and the now abandoned Radiant Church, it was just a small temple. It was early summer, vines crawled all over the temple walls, concealing the entire building in a sea of green, making it look even more exquisite and serene.

At the front entrance of the temple, a small square, stood a white stone statue: a graceful woman with both hands holding a stone bottle, standing gracefully in a pool of spring water, water continuously flowed from the mouth of the bottle. A circle of water was built around the statue with white stones, and civilians would come and worship the statue, then scoop a bowl of water from the pool and hold it carefully as they went home.

    …Is this an artificial fountain?

What powered it, a water tower, a pump, or a magic circle?

It couldn’t possibly be a divine blessing, right?

Gretel watched curiously. Even if it was powered by a water tower and pump, it was pretty good, at least it could provide an unlimited supply of water. He wondered if the water had undergone coagulation, filtration, sedimentation, and disinfection…tsk, they probably didn’t have bleach, maybe using holy light would do?

After all, this place, even the streets were a foot of dirt on a sunny day and a foot of mud on a rainy day. There were no sewers, the quality of daily drinking water was highly questionable, if a cholera outbreak happened…

People would start dying left and right, it would be a matter of minutes.

-As a former emergency surgeon, Gretel felt like he was going crazy on behalf of his colleagues in emergency medicine just thinking about it.

His thoughts were interrupted. Two rows of guards rushed out of the temple entrance, parting to the left and right, standing in formation. Following them, the Spring Water Goddess priests filed out.

Gretel’s eyes lit up. The leader was wearing a silver crown, a light blue silk robe, and two daffodils embroidered with silver thread on his waistband, signifying his status as a Seventh-Level Pastor. He was wearing round spectacles on the bridge of his nose, shining brightly in the firelight – spectacles! Spectacles!

The technology of this era could already produce spectacles!

If they have spectacles, they have lenses. If they have lenses, they have the foundation for medical observation!

    Microscopes, I’m coming!

Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, antibiotics, I’m coming!

He stared at them, but no one was looking at him. The Spring Water Goddess High Priest hurried down the steps, took two quick steps, and stood calmly. He raised both hands, making a gesture of prayer, and smiled at the War God Bishop ten steps away:

“May the Spring Water Goddess bless you.”

He came out to greet them, stepped down, stood, and bowed, all in one fluid motion, both enthusiastic and elegant. The procedure was clearly honed, every detail flawless, in Gretel’s eyes, it was exactly like when their dean greeted superiors for inspection…

“May the War God bless you.”

The bald-headed Bishop smiled in return.

After the two religious figures greeted each other, the Priest turned his gaze to Knight Nolan standing beside him. Gretel clearly saw his eyes glance over him, also scanning the Temple messenger and the two guards who came to arrest him, but he could pretend like he hadn’t seen anything, smiling, and bowing as usual:

“May the Spring Water Goddess bless you.”

“Thank you for the Goddess’ mercy!”

From the front, the sides, and behind, the soldiers answered in unison.

Gretel followed their example and lowered his head. Clasping his hands, he muttered a response. He pretended to be just an ordinary soldier, unremarkable in any way.

    However, he failed. Half of the team was War God priests, each wearing robes;

    From Captain Nolan down, the knights weren’t wearing robes, but the fineness of their armor was not on the same level as Gretel’s;

Even the guards of the Spring Water Goddess Temple, when they came out to arrest someone, they had to at least wear a decent uniform to maintain face outside…

At a glance, he was the one who stood out the most, wearing a rough linen waistcoat and knee-length shorts.

Not only that, after entering the temple, Captain Nolan pulled him over and pushed him in front of the High Priest:

“This kid is a newcomer to our City Guard, he recently awakened Healing Technique, and I have high hopes for him. I heard your Temple summoned him for some questions, so I came with him to listen together, you wouldn’t object, would you?”

    Gretel: …I’m not a kid!
