Chapter 55: Can Magic Detection Really See Bones?
Gretel stopped and regained his senses.
He looked at the person who spoke.
… He didn’t see anyone.
He lowered his head again. 15 degrees, 30 degrees, 45 degrees… On the floor in front of him, the bear-cub child he saw a few days ago was red in the face with anger, jumping up and down, stretching his arms to wave in front of him:
“I’m right here! Who are you looking at?!”
It was this little guy again. Gretel had a headache. He vaguely nodded to him and continued walking up. The bear-cub child followed closely behind, constantly yelling:
“Where are you going? Hey, where are you going! That’s where the official Lawmasters stay! You’re not even a disciple!”
The second floor and above of the Lawmaster’s Tower, before, Gretel wouldn’t have been qualified to go up.
This Lawmaster’s Tower, the first floor was the hall and the library, and Lawmaster disciples—like the bear-cub child—although he was only ten years old, he had already stepped into the magical door—lived on the second floor, and official Lawmasters lived on the third floor.
The fourth floor was used for alchemy and experimental spells, and the fifth floor was the residence of Gelman Lawmaster, the presiding Lawmaster of the Tower, and the hub of the Tower was also located there.
From the second floor onwards, no matter how rich or powerful ordinary people were, they were not allowed to enter without permission.
Gretel originally wasn’t qualified to go up either. But now, just now, he successfully cast his first spell!
He was a Lawmaster disciple!
Going to the second floor was only natural!
Going to the third floor to ask a Lawmaster he knew a few questions, well, that wasn’t a big problem, hahaha…
The little boy followed all the way, chased all the way, yelled all the way, making the staircase buzz. Gretel wished he could physically mute him. As soon as his feet stopped, he heard a loud shout from the third floor:
“Absolutely not!”
“What’s not allowed!” A familiar voice roared back even louder: “I’m almost done! Why do you have to stop my research to let you buy alchemy materials!”
Was it Elliott Lawmaster? What was he arguing with someone about? Gretel immediately pricked up his ears. The other person slapped the table:
“What about you? Does improving spells not require materials? Not require scrolls? I’ve at least produced something. What about you? How many scrolls have you ruined these days? —Wait for the Magic Council to come for their assessment, see how you’ll explain yourself!”
“I’m fine!”
“Oh, you’re fine? Just relying on the book that little guy copied? Don’t be ridiculous, the words are still the original words, just rearranged a little. This result, the Magic Council will see it?”
Eh… This seemed to be talking about my dictionary?
Gretel was stunned, quietly taking two steps back, lest he be caught by the Lawmasters in an awkward position. Unexpectedly, the staircase door burst open, the blond boy who had been blown out of the window a few days ago rushed out, saw them, and immediately became furious:
“What are you doing up here? Is this where you belong?!”
“He insisted on coming up!” Before Gretel could answer, the boy had already spoken, his voice shrill:
“I couldn’t stop him! Kalen, this guy isn’t even a Lawmaster disciple, he has no right to come up here!”
“You?”
Kalen Lawmaster’s gaze immediately turned to Gretel. He pointed at Gretel with a finger, light flickered on his fingertip, obviously wanting to vent his anger on Gretel. As for whether this spell was ice or fire, wind or earth, Gretel was inexperienced and couldn’t tell at a glance.
Damn it!
The stairs were narrow and there was nowhere to hide!
Gretel didn’t want to be a punching bag at all. Before the spell was cast, he took a deep breath and shouted:
“Elliott! I learned my first spell, I have a question for you!”
Learned a spell?
Kalen Lawmaster’s light flickered on his fingertip and then extinguished. After learning a spell, one is a Lawmaster disciple, and occasionally going to the third floor of the Lawmaster’s Tower was not unacceptable. Besides, he was looking for Elliott—
He snorted, turned to go upstairs, and continued with his alchemy experiment. But he had only taken one step when he heard the little boy yell:
“You learned magic? Impossible! You didn’t even know how to read a few days ago!”
Hm?
Kalen Lawmaster paused. Inside the room, Elliott Lawmaster had already said in a raised voice:
“Gretel? Come in!”
A few days ago he didn’t know how to read, and today he has already learned magic? Kalen Lawmaster was curious and followed him in. Elliott was tidying up the scattered paper and pens, still angry, but when he saw Gretel, his expression softened a little, with a hint of joy:
“Did you cast your spell successfully? What was the first spell you learned? What question do you have for me?”
“He’s definitely bragging!” The little boy pulled Kalen Lawmaster aside and complained:
“He insisted on running upstairs, and when you caught him, he said he was a Lawmaster disciple! Lying! I saw it with my own eyes, clearly a few days ago, he didn’t even know all the magic script!”
Is that so?
The blond boy looked at Elliott inquiringly.
Elliott was also a little embarrassed. The boy was the grandson of Gelman Lawmaster’s mentor. The Grand Lawmaster represented the Magic Council to inspect the surrounding Lawmaster’s Towers, and because he disliked his grandson’s mischievous behavior, he left him in the care of his own disciple. With such an identity, although they were both official Lawmasters, they couldn’t scold the child rashly.
Elliott could only pretend he didn’t hear. He coughed, turned to Gretel:
“What spell did you learn? Cast it again, let me see!”
“It’s—Detection Magic.” As soon as Gretel’s answer came out, the little boy let out a “hmph”, mocking even louder:
“Detection Magic? Whether this spell is successful or not, don’t you get to decide? —You won’t use it to fool people, will you!”
“George!” Kalen Lawmaster hissed. He then turned to Gretel, commanding:
“Alright, cast your spell here, see how many magical items are in the hall. As long as you name three correctly, or point out the strongest one, it’s considered that you cast the spell successfully.”
Gretel slightly bowed his head, indicating agreement. He stepped back two steps, with his back against the wall, trying to widen his field of vision as much as possible, and began to cast the spell with concentration.
The hall was only about 30 square meters, six wooden chairs surrounded a rectangular table, taking up most of the space in the hall. There was a chandelier overhead, tapestries on the walls, and a fireplace at the end of the hall. At a glance, it was not much different from the library on the lower floor.
Gretel chanted the spell softly. With his voice, magic auras, light and dark, flickered in his meditation, dazzling white and yellowish brown, light blue and azure blue, different shades. His gaze shifted slightly, and there it was!
The bear-cub child, his robe, the headband on his head, the necklace on his chest, three items were glowing, brighter than the furnishings in the room!
The children of the third generation of Lawmasters are truly terrifying… Gretel silently swallowed his resentment towards the bear-cub child, shifting his gaze, and began to list the magical items one by one:
“The chandelier, the tapestry on the left, the fireplace…”
Although the aura was very dim, and the level of enchantment was very low, it was probably about the same as the bookshelf downstairs, but there were three of them!
He named one item, and the boy opened his mouth. In the end, his eyes and mouth were wide open, forming three O shapes:
“Impossible… you actually…”
“How is it? Is there anyone who learns faster than you?”
The blond boy even added fuel to the fire, bent down, and deliberately asked the little boy in his ear. The little boy was stunned for a while, then shouted:
“I don’t believe it!”
He turned and ran out of the hall, slamming the staircase door shut. With a bang, the vase on the table even trembled.
Vase?
Vase!
Gretel’s heart skipped a beat. He rushed forward, pulled out the fresh flowers in the vase, and poured them out. A jewel rolled out of the vase, and its light shone brightly in the Detection Magic vision.
Gretel reached out and enveloped the light.
What he saw was still a hazy blur.
It’s another day where old books have grown faster than new books in the collection.
Sad.
