    ## Chapter 98: Don’t Recognize the Disease? Then Let’s Dissect It!

    Questioned?

    Grett wasn’t nervous at all.

Since his internship, he had been rotating through different departments, undergoing weekly grand rounds where everyone was questioned by the head doctors until their legs went weak. After starting his career, he’d been scolded by teachers, head doctors, head nurses, and, when he had bad luck, by head doctors and the dean during hospital-wide consultations – it was like navigating a mountain of blades and a sea of fire.

Now, someone was questioning his treatment plan?

Was that even a big deal?

The only strange thing was that such a person would be among the War God’s priests. Sarcastic, a newcomer, perhaps? I should know all the priests of the War God Temple, shouldn’t I?

Grett turned his head to look over. The speaker stood up, his long robe billowing around him, hiding any visible muscle definition – oh, he really was a newcomer, a different style indeed. Seeing Grett look at him, he sneered and raised his voice:

“Little one, how long have you been learning healing techniques? Have you ever treated this disease? Ordering your teacher around is fine, but ordering us at the War God Temple? By the War God, we… ”

    “Aiken!”

The bald-headed bishop roared, his voice like a muffled thunderclap rolling over the side chapel. He strode towards Aiken, his five fingers spread like five carrots, reaching out to grab him. Grett quickly intervened:

    “Wait!”

He extended his hand to stop the bishop. The bishop stopped, still fuming, glaring angrily at Aiken. Grett smiled:

“You make a good point, I am young, with limited experience. This plague, I have not personally treated it. But knowing where to treat is not difficult…”

He turned to Elder Elwin, his expression serious, and bowed slightly:

“Teacher, can you help us get a body? Someone who died from this plague, one that can be freely dissected, cut into pieces…”

    “You have another way?”

Elder Elwin raised an eyebrow. In front of outsiders, he wouldn’t directly ask: Is it another one of your God’s revelations? However, while others didn’t understand, Grett saw the confident look and nodded with a smile:

    “Of course.”

The body was soon brought in. The city guards searched and quickly found the body of a homeless man. With no children, no family, no relatives, no one would cause a scene no matter how they dismembered him.

The third side chapel in the church was cleared out.

The War God priests, very skilled, moved tables and chairs, forming a circle of benches inside and a circle of tables outside, surrounding the dissection table tightly.

Grett donned a specially designed leather apron and walked in slowly. Little Johannes stood by the deceased’s feet, holding the scalpel like last time, offering it to Grett.

But Grett didn’t take it. He held his hands flat in front of his chest, palms outwards, his wrists about a fist away from his chest. Looking around, he raised his voice:

“We can never understand all diseases.

We can treat those we already know through experience; for those we’ve never seen, the fastest way to understand them is to dissect a body – to see which parts have changed, which organs have been damaged.

That is where we need to prioritize our treatment.”

At this point, Grett glanced at Aiken. Aiken’s face turned black, and he opened his mouth to speak. But Grett didn’t give him a chance, he lifted his head, his voice even louder:

“Therefore, we must thank these dead.

They, with their own bodies, tell us the secrets inside the human body. They, for us, point the way forward for our medical skills.

They lie there, silent, but they are teachers worthy of our respect.”

    Just like the recent disaster.

It was the first, the second, and many more bodies of patients that pointed out the key points for doctors who first challenged this disease.

Grett stepped back. He straightened his collar and bowed deeply.

One bow, then another, then a third. The movements were reverent, the expression solemn.

    The hall was silent.

Dozens of priests, the Natural God Sect led by Elder Elwin, the War God Temple led by the bald-headed bishop, watched silently as Grett, as a priest and a mage, bowed three times to the body of a homeless man.

After a moment, Elder Elwin sighed softly:

    “You should also remember this.”

A soft chorus of agreement echoed around, like a light breeze passing over water. Grett straightened up, finally taking the scalpel from Little Johannes’s hand and making a cut:

“There are many steps to dissecting a corpse. We are pressed for time, so let’s focus on the internal organs. – In this plague, the main symptom is diarrhea, so let’s start with the gastrointestinal tract.”

The light of the illumination spell shone faintly. In Grett’s hands, the scalpel, the dissection scissors, the tissue forceps, each instrument flew up and down in an orderly fashion. The entire side chapel was silent, everyone watching as Grett lifted an organ and displayed it:

    “The stomach is normal.”

“The small intestine is normal in shape, no congestion, no inflammation.”

    “How do you know?”

Someone shouted from the crowd. Grett continued working, without turning his head:

“You’ll know after you’ve seen enough. – When we’re done here, you can go find a body that died from normal causes. I’ll dissect it for you and tell you what’s different.”

    “Uh…”

The questioner fell silent. The surrounding priests stirred slightly, some whispering to each other:

“So how many has he dissected…”

    “He’s only sixteen…”

    “He’s a mage, right? A necromancer?”

Grett pretended not to hear. He continued to dissect, explaining as he went:

    “The appendix is normal.”

    “The ascending colon is normal.”

“The descending colon is normal in appearance.”

“The sigmoid colon… hmm, look closely everyone, there is obvious bleeding here in the sigmoid colon, and pus, consistent with the patient’s fecal matter…”

    “Liver… gallbladder… spleen… kidneys…”

“So, this disease primarily affects the sigmoid colon.” After displaying each organ, he returned it to its original position, then held his hands flat in front of his chest and declared loudly:

“You all saw, the sigmoid colon is located in the lower left abdomen. So, when using the healing technique, focus it on this area to achieve the best effect. – Any more questions?”

Silence. The origin of the disease and how the healing technique should be used, each school had its own way. However, the body lay clearly on the table, the swollen and bleeding intestines displayed before everyone, such evidence was irrefutable.

    – Even without a normal death body for comparison, the affected area was different in appearance from the normal intestines above, anyone with eyes could see it.

Even Aiken, the first to speak, avoided everyone’s gaze, lowering his head and staying silent.

“Cough, since there are no more questions, let’s do it as Grett said.” Elder Elwin spoke, easing the atmosphere. He walked closer with a smile, looking at the body lying on the dissection table, its internal organs cut open:

“Little Grett, I’m getting old, I tend to forget things. Which segment of the intestine is where, where to aim the healing technique, can you draw a diagram, so everyone can see it?”

    “Of course, no problem!”

    Grett bowed.

Soon, a large stand was erected at the entrance of the mild case ward leading to the severe case ward. A simple and clear anatomical diagram was posted on it, visible to all.

People flowed past the chart. Grett saw several priests glancing at it after treating one person, then again after treating two people…

Soon, excited shouts rose one after another.

“The healing technique works much better!”

    “Yes, mine too!”

“It saves at least thirty percent!”

“Forty percent too! Don’t just throw it in blindly, think about what you saw earlier, how that intestine looked!”

    “Little Grett, you are amazing!”

Grett smiled. The improvement in the healing technique wasn’t his imagination, familiarizing himself with the anatomy of the human body really helped with treatment!

In such a huge epidemic, every bit of efficiency saved in the healing technique was crucial!
