Chapter 99: The Spring Water Temple, A Confrontation

Gretel was in high spirits. Although he hadn’t personally participated in the treatment, the overall treatment efficiency had improved by over 30% under his guidance!

“I’m awesome!” He punched the air with force. Seeing the pastors efficiently carrying out their duties, Gretel tiptoed behind Elder Elvin and quietly tugged on his robe.

    “Teacher, I’m going out.”

“What are you going to do?”

“I’m going to find the true source of this plague!”

Gretel had never thought about staying in the Radiant Church – or, rather, the centralized medical point. He was only a Level One Pastor. He could only use a handful of Healing Techniques, and with full-fledged treatment of serious patients, he could deplete his magical reserves within half an hour.

This amount of treatment was a drop in the ocean compared to the hundreds of sick people.

But in the face of this epidemic, he had his own unique value! Some things, no one else could do but him, no one else would even think of doing them!

He strode into the city guard barracks. In the main hall of the barracks, Baron Vaughn, Sir Reeve, and several wealthy merchants who had donated money had all left. The food merchant was arranging food supplies for the Radiant Church, and the head of the Construction Guild was leading people to build stoves.

Of the people Gretel had summoned, only two remained seated, looking at each other in fear.

“Sorry to keep you waiting.” Gretel hurried in. They had been left alone, and after inquiring everywhere, they finally learned that this young man had summoned them. Seeing him was like seeing a savior. The dye merchant cried out:

    “I’ll donate five gold coins!”

“I’ll donate five, no, six!” The jeweler wasn’t to be outdone. “Lawmaster, if you have any good gems, I’ll set them for you for free! No labor costs!”

“You don’t have to donate.” Gretel quickly shook his head. He originally didn’t know who was who, but the jeweler’s words saved him the trouble of asking. Gretel first turned to the dye merchant:

“Could you please give me one ounce of each of your dyes – no, half an ounce is enough. Bill it at the market price, and I’ll have the clerk pay you.”

“No need, no need! Just a little dye, I’ll donate it directly—”

“I’ll pay for it. I’m short on time, please be as fast as possible.” Gretel had no intention of talking to him further and directly interrupted. Then he turned to the jeweler:

“I have a very important task for you. – First, do you know how to grind glass? Can you make a magnifying glass?”

    “I can… but it takes a long time…”

“Do you have a magnifying glass ready-made?”

    “Yes!”

“Great! – So, look, can you make something like this…”

The two of them mumbled and mumbled. Gretel wrote and drew, the jeweler sat beside him, constantly asking questions and discussing with him, completely absorbed in the conversation. The dye merchant tried to interject several times but couldn’t, shrugged his shoulders, and walked away on his own.

“It doesn’t seem difficult. I’ll try to make one. Give me five days, I should be able to make it… copper tubing, knobs, these all take time, you can’t rush it…”

“Five days is not enough!” Gretel interrupted decisively. “I can only give you one day, tomorrow at this time, you must have it, no matter what!”

The jeweler looked embarrassed. Gretel stood up, his hands on the table, bent over to look at him, trying to appear as intimidating as possible:

“I’ll pay you! If you need manpower, I’ll find it! You can ask for anything you want, but by tomorrow at this time, you must give me something I can use!

    – This is very important, whether or not we can save the city from the plague depends on it!”

The jeweler was startled and nodded repeatedly. Gretel paced back and forth for a while, then called over a clerk:

“Give him whatever he wants, and bill me later. Also, buy me a thousand plates and a thousand shallow dishes that can cover the plates!

    – Oh, right, get two thousand pieces of clear glass cut from a glassmaker, no color, half-inch square pieces! A thousand of normal thickness, and another thousand as thin as possible!”

    “Two thousand? That many?”

The clerk was startled. Was he opening a store? Even if he was opening a store, he couldn’t just ask for plates and dishes! At least get some bowls, spoons, forks, knives, etc… And the glass pieces, what were those for? If you wanted colorful ones, I’d think you were making stained glass windows…

He looked strangely at Gretel. Gretel chuckled: “I’m afraid it won’t be enough…”

Gretel demanded one thing after another, acquiring things that others couldn’t understand. At the same time, inside the closed Spring Water Goddess Temple, it was already in an uproar. The High Priest, with a group of priests, formed a formation in front of the room where the man had died, ringing holy bells and shaking holy bells, praying loudly:

“Great Spring Water Goddess, please have mercy on your people…”

“Great Spring Water Goddess, please grant us clean water to quench the thirst of your people…”

“Great Spring Water Goddess, please purify this land…”

The Spring Water Goddess’s priesthood was directly related to water, and her priests were indeed skilled in purifying water sources. As the prayers were chanted, gurgling springs flowed from bottles and jugs, pouring onto the ground, immediately fading the black mist on the ground by a layer. However, as soon as the prayers ended, two low-level priests cried out:

    “My stomach doesn’t feel good… I’m going to leave for a while…”

The High Priest wanted to spit blood.

Since Roman Knight had died, they had performed exorcism rituals countless times, and the black mist in the room was getting lighter.

However, more and more people were getting sick. At first, it was servants without supernatural powers and who were not in good health, then guards and apprentices, and now even low-level priests were starting to get sick…

    This was a joke!

However, the Spring Water Goddess was the god of purity, the god of crystal clarity. To have filth appear during prayers was disrespectful to the goddess. He could only wave his hand and let those two go quickly. The large group of people packed up their things and walked out, and halfway through, a young waiter, carrying his robe, rushed in and approached the High Priest:

“Your Excellency, those poor people at the door have all been dragged away!”

    “Dragged away?”

    Dragged away is good…

The Spring Water Goddess was the ancestral god of the kingdom, and more than half of the kingdom’s nobles were devoted to the Spring Water Goddess. Even if the temple was closed, they were entitled to receive treatment. Of course, the donations to the temple would not be less, and the sons and daughters sent to the temple to be trained as priests and knights would not be less…

As for those poor people who could only pray and shout on the plaza in front of the temple, scooping water from the fountain in front of the door to drink. They were just a decoration in normal times, more or less, it didn’t matter. But at a crucial time, it was okay to drag them away.

“By the way, I also heard people on the street beating gongs and shouting that they shouldn’t drink water from the fountain… They say that this plague is caused by drinking raw water, and everyone should drink boiled water from the stoves…”

    “What?!”

    The High Priest was furious.

The fountain in front of the temple represented the blessing of the Spring Water Goddess, and the water in the fountain was drawn from the underground of the temple, water blessed by the priests!

To tell the citizens not to drink from the fountain in front of the temple was tantamount to saying that the Spring Water Goddess’ blessing was flawed?!

This was digging at the foundation of the temple!

It was slapping the goddess in the face!

“What nonsense is this?! Take a team out and chase them away, then find out who is spreading this nonsense!”
