Feng Jie was astonished. She immediately switched sides, protecting Xu Zhizhi, and the two of them went into the interrogation room and shut the door.

As for Qin Su and the others, assaulting police officers is a serious offense—they weren’t that bold.

The eldest son of the He family looked bewildered until he was handcuffed and forced to kneel. Then, he shouted, “I’m innocent! I’m innocent! I didn’t extort anyone!”

He struggled, trying to break free.

“He Lao’er (He’s second son) has already confessed, and we have video evidence,” Qin Su said coldly.

Hearing his nickname, the eldest son fell silent, seemingly surprised that the others had been caught so quickly, and that there was video evidence.

His mind raced, and he stammered, “I didn’t do it! That wasn’t extortion; I was just asking my brother for some money! It was a joke between us brothers! It doesn’t count as extortion!”

His frantic defense even momentarily stunned Qin Su.

“The victim is He Chunsheng, right?” Because of the video angle, they hadn’t yet found the victim of the “honey trap” (仙人跳 – a type of blackmail scheme where someone is tricked into a compromising situation that is then used for extortion).

But they hadn’t expected the eldest son to incriminate himself. He seemed to think that because the extortion target was his brother, it wouldn’t constitute a crime. He loudly defended himself again: “I was just joking with my brother, we were just messing around, it wasn’t a honey trap or extortion!”

“Pfft, you don’t think extortion doesn’t count just because the target is your brother, do you?” One of Qin Su’s colleagues couldn’t help but scoff.

The eldest son froze, his lips trembling.

At that moment, someone rushed forward and slapped him across the face without a word, “You ungrateful wretch! You colluded with outsiders to extort 250,000 yuan from the family!”

The furious voice immediately attracted everyone’s attention. The angry person was He Fu (He’s father).

After slapping his eldest son, he pointed at him, trembling with rage.

The slap was incredibly forceful, causing the eldest son’s face to swell rapidly.

Qin Su and his colleague pulled him up. He stood facing his father, his initial shock and fear vanished with the slap. His eyes were fixed on his father, revealing a previously unseen ruthlessness and resentment.

“That’s just like you! You never ask for reasons, you just hit me! Was it my plan to set him up? He’s just stupid!” The eldest son clenched his fists, his temples throbbing, his anger evident as he roared, his voice echoing throughout the police station.

He Fu, his hand still raised, stared at his eldest son, dumbfounded. He seemed to be wondering why his son, who had done wrong, was so self-righteous. Then, feeling his paternal authority challenged, he roared, “You’re right now? You harmed your brother, you caused the family to lose 250,000 yuan, and you’re right now?!”

“Why am I not right? Don’t I deserve a share of the family’s money? But you only give it to my brother, not me! You know how much you’ve given to him over the years, and how much to me! Don’t you know how biased you are?” the eldest son retorted coldly.

He Mu (He’s mother) wept uncontrollably, on the verge of fainting.

He Fu, furious, stared at his eldest son, his chest heaving violently, “That’s not an excuse for harming your brother! You’re the older brother, you should shoulder more responsibility, take care of your brother!”

“Enough! Stop it! You always say this, from childhood to now, are you not tired? The older brother shouldering more responsibility means getting more money, more family assets. You give me nothing, so why should I shoulder more?” The eldest son resisted being pulled by Qin Su and his colleague, his eyes burning with anger.

He Mu cried, looking at her eldest son, “But he’s your brother! How could you do that?”

She truly loved both children, but she admittedly favored the younger one slightly, though not as much as her husband. She couldn’t accept how her eldest son treated his brother; in her eyes, they were rare harmonious siblings.

Hearing this, the eldest son’s eyes bulged, his gaze tearing into them. Then, suddenly, his anger turned to laughter.

“Hahahaha, you guys, you’re not even trying to act anymore! To be honest, I was the one who encouraged He Chunsheng to go to Xu Zhizhi! I implied he could stop her that way!” He looked at them with a manic grin, once again self-incriminating.

He Fu and He Mu stood frozen, never imagining that their eldest son was also involved. He Fu clutched his chest with one hand and pointed at his eldest son with the other, nearly convulsing with rage.

Xu Zhizhi and Feng Jie opened the blinds, watching the drama unfold in the hall. Even Xu Zhizhi had to admire this; biased parents and a self-incriminating “wolf” (a metaphor for someone who reveals damaging information about themselves).

Just as Xu Zhizhi thought it was over, that Qin Su and his team would wrap things up and take the eldest son away, he spoke again.

He looked at his angry parents and his richly dressed sister-in-law, and could no longer bear it. He laughed again, “You favor your younger son’s family, treating me like an old workhorse, and you’re still angry, thinking you’re not biased?”

“Damn it!” He Fu clutched his chest, feeling a sharp pain. But he still endured the pain and shouted, sensing what his eldest son was about to say.

The eldest son understood. A satisfied smile spread across his face, “You saw me, didn’t you? You’re afraid, aren’t you? So why were you so calmly biased before, even… you wanted me to take the blame for my brother’s murder!”

At these words, the entire police station fell silent.

Xu Zhizhi and Feng Jie’s mouths dropped open.

Feng Jie thought she’d misheard, but knew she hadn’t.

Xu Zhizhi was dumbfounded, full of admiration. This was a true “wolf” self-incrimination.

Yan Xue hadn’t come, which was a shame; Xu Zhizhi regretted it a little. She didn’t know Yan Xue’s subsequent plans, but it certainly hadn’t anticipated what was happening now.

“Sure enough, reality doesn’t need logic,” Xu Zhizhi propped her chin on her hands, remarking seriously.

Feng Jie was stunned, still clueless about what had happened.

The police officers from the neighboring county, who had been standing aside, stood up and stared at the eldest son of the He family.

The eldest son looked at his parents, a triumphant smile on his face, “I’ll tell you everything! I’ll tell you everything!”

He’d known his parents wanted him to take the blame. They didn’t know their house wasn’t soundproof. He’d been smoking on the second-floor balcony, anxiously searching for the remains. Unexpectedly, he overheard his parents’ conversation.

He’d been wondering how to clear his family’s name, but it turned out his parents had already planned to frame him for his brother’s crime.

Anger and resentment overwhelmed him, consuming his remaining reason. Why should he take the blame for something he didn’t do?

He’d thought he could refuse, but the extortion had been exposed. He and his brother would go to jail, what would happen to his wife and daughter? With his parents’ bias, they wouldn’t fare well. So, he might as well send them all in!

He looked at Qin Su and the police from the neighboring county, “Take me away, I’ll tell you everything.”

Qin Su looked at Xu Zhizhi. Even he, with his extensive experience, hadn’t expected this twist.

Xu Zhizhi informed Yan Xue, who rushed to the scene and finally saw the dejected and despairing family. This was the expression they used to have, and the expression she and her sister had worn for many years. Now, it was finally on their faces.

Tears welled up in Yan Xue’s eyes, but the corners of her mouth curved upwards in a smile. She wiped away her tears and smiled at Xu Zhizhi.

Her original plan was to have them exhume their mother’s remains and bring them home, then she would report it, providing evidence. The traces and remains would make them speechless.

Unexpectedly, the plot took an unexpected turn. The eldest son of the He family had directly confessed.

And in the following time, under the murderous glares of his parents and sister-in-law, he identified the location.

He even described the scene, time, and location of the murder in detail.

And to make his parents’ crimes even more serious, he confessed how they killed people in the illegal coal mine.

Seventeen years ago, after realizing the generosity of the illegal coal mine owner’s compensation, the entire village was in turmoil. He was seventeen at the time, having finished junior high and had been working in the coal mine for a year. Because he was treated as mere labor, certain things and conversations weren’t hidden from him.

When he first learned about the compensation, his parents had already hatched a plan. At the time, they hadn’t thought about killing his aunt, because they wanted to use their brotherhood to get the compensation from the coal mine owner.

Unexpectedly, another family in the village struck first. That family had three sons. Their oldest son, who was old and unwell, died, and his two younger brothers each received 100,000 yuan in compensation. Afraid of being discovered, they planned to act every few months.

Because they were brothers, the other party was not suspicious. They hit him on the back of the head with a hammer and then knocked down the support pillars, simulating a cave-in.

The act went smoothly. When the body was dug out, he had already died from excessive blood loss and lack of oxygen. As for the other two people, it was purely accidental; the couple hadn’t expected them to be inside when they attacked.

The coal mine owner vaguely knew something was up, fearing implication and these desperate people, so he quietly paid compensation and fled. But in anger, he didn’t give the money to his parents; he gave it to his aunt. He left the same day, his parents weren’t expecting this.

Then came the funeral, and his parents were furious, feeling cheated because they hadn’t received anything.

“So, you planned to kill her?” Yan Xue stood at the identification site, her eyes red with anger.

The eldest son of the He family looked at Yan Xue in surprise, unsure why she was so agitated. But he had resigned himself to his fate, so he didn’t dwell on it and continued, “We originally wanted to ask for some money. In the coal mine they dared to kill people, but they weren’t so bold outside.”

    “But they didn’t get any.”

The eldest son scoffed, as if laughing at his parents and the absurdity of everything.

This incident shocked the entire village. Villagers formed a large circle outside the cordon, watching the He family of four being handcuffed. Some wept bitterly; the deaths of the men from two other families were also involved. Not everyone is heartless and wishes for the death of their family members, so they cried, mourning their husbands/sons.

The He parents looked numb and desperate as the excavation and evidence collection took place. He Chunsheng angrily glared at his older brother, shouting, “It wasn’t me! I didn’t kill her!”

Looking at the scene, a mocking expression appeared on the eldest son’s face.

“Wasn’t you? I still have the rock you used to kill your aunt! The blood and fingerprints are still there! You couldn’t show off at school because you didn’t get any money. You tried to persuade your parents to kill her, but they refused. So you tricked your aunt, brought her home, and killed her. I witnessed the whole thing.” He looked at his younger brother with malice, “Surprised? Hahahahaha!”

After the murder, his younger brother was panicked. But only for a moment; after calming down, he quietly went to his uncle’s house while the uncle’s two daughters were out and took all the money, also taking a few pieces of clothing. How terrifying and calm he was back then! Unfortunately, now he only trembled under his own confession.

The eldest son threw his head back and laughed, releasing the thirty years of pent-up frustration as the older brother.

He Chunsheng turned pale, almost collapsing, held up by the police officers.

The eldest son looked at his wife, signaling her not to be afraid, that everything would be alright. His goal was simple: to use this evidence to destroy his parents and brother. Then, the entire He family’s assets would be theirs! No matter what, the situation couldn’t be worse.

Xu Zhizhi put her arm around Yan Xue, looking at the eldest son of the He family, sighing that evil people meet their match. Dogs biting dogs, saving them from using more tricks.

Soon, based on the second pit, Yan Xue’s mother’s remains were unearthed. Seeing the bones being taken out, Yan Xue collapsed, crying, and about to rush forward.

Xu Zhizhi held Yan Xue back firmly, mainly to protect the scene and allow the forensic examiner to conduct an autopsy.

Yan Xue couldn’t bear the sight and clung to Xu Zhizhi, weeping uncontrollably in her arms. Even after countless mental preparations, she couldn’t resist the pain of this moment.

Xu Zhizhi felt her shirt getting wet and reached out to comfort Yan Xue.

Feng Jie watched from the side, understanding what had happened, and looked at Yan Xue with compassion. Many villagers were also shedding tears; the village’s relationships were complicated, with many relatives.

Director Zhou stood to the side, looking at Xu Zhizhi, sighing, not knowing what to say. He thought the events would be related to Xu Zhizhi, but it turned out that it was the actress he had chosen, and Xu Zhizhi was also involved.

The eldest son of the He family looked at Yan Xue, his expression stiffening, remembering her donation to build the village road.

“So, it was you…” he mused. It seemed they had been targeted for a long time, and even if he hadn’t spoken, they would have been caught. Thinking that he could use this to plead for a reduced sentence, a smile appeared on his face, glad he had spoken up early.

On the other side, He Chunsheng roared, wanting to tear his brother apart. All because of his brother, he didn’t know how many years he would be sentenced to.

The eldest son of the He family let him struggle without fear.

An hour later, the remains were completely exhumed, and forensic examiners from the county began technical identification.

Xu Zhizhi didn’t join the crowd, taking Yan Xue away.

Soon, more people arrived: Yan Xue’s maternal grandparents. They wept uncontrollably, never believing that their daughter had abandoned her two daughters and run away. When it happened, they had reported it, but at the time there were no leads at all.

Unexpectedly, after so many years, their daughter was buried under the foundation of the village road, for seventeen whole years.

Yan Xue comforted her grandparents, and the three of them wept together. She and her sister were initially adopted by their uncle, but it was only a pretense. After less than a month, they were sent to their grandparents and their uncle ran to the county town, never contacting them again. The elderly couple had no choice but to raise her and her sister. Initially, she only suspected her uncle and aunt, but she wasn’t sure. After inquiring everywhere and confirming it, she didn’t know where they were buried. She could only keep asking the villagers for clues, and eventually, through various investigations, she located the village road. Filming in the village was her suggestion; the natural scenery and the degree of restoration were very good, and Director Zhou would certainly agree. Everything proceeded smoothly, and the other party fell for it. She knew that Xu Zhizhi became the second female lead, and she only wanted to use her superb profiling skills to quickly confirm her mother’s identity, report it to the police, and arrest the suspects to prevent them from escaping. As for the harassment incident, she had expected it, but she hadn’t expected the other party to be so reckless. She had not expected the conflict within the He family, nor that the eldest son would confess like this. But she also breathed a sigh of relief, because the more complex the plan, the easier it was to make mistakes. What if there was some unexpected situation that she hadn’t considered, such as the other party digging it up and throwing it somewhere, and the people she hired didn’t notice it, and the plan to allow the police to confirm the murderer failed?

After she finished crying, she looked at Xu Zhizhi, her eyes full of guilt.

    Xu Zhizhi shook her head.

Here, everything came to an end, the rest is not much to say.
