    Eight hours ago…

Wei Dongcheng was invited by his uncle to dinner at their home for the first time, just the two of them. Before this, his aunt had always disliked him, and his uncle never spoke up; he usually had to wipe his face to visit his uncle’s house. The last time his uncle had taken him out to dinner was when he asked him to get close to Xu Zhizhi. He had never imagined that after succeeding, he would be treated this way.

As his uncle casually wrapped an arm around him while walking into the Wei family home, he felt pleasantly surprised. His uncle expressed how much he valued him, believing he was a person with potential. Wei Dongcheng was too excited; he had been affirmed by the most successful uncle in the family. Previously, those friends who flattered him said that his uncle looked down on him and wouldn’t let him inherit the family business even if he didn’t have a son.

He didn’t believe it because his uncle simply didn’t like daughters. What he wanted was to be the only male heir of this generation in the family. Now, his uncle had finally recognized his talent, and the family business was set to be handed over to him. Wei Dongcheng’s heart surged, and he felt lightheaded with joy.

Wei Sheng watched Wei Dongcheng like this, and a vicious glint passed through his eyes. His nephew was too foolish. Did he really think he could directly take over everything because he was the only boy in the family? How laughable. How very laughable. He wasn’t incapable of having children; if he wanted a son, wouldn’t he be able to father one himself? Besides his wife, he could find seven or eight more to bear him a child, even go through that process until one was born.

Who would be fond of a nephew, especially the son of a brother he despised? Back then, his brother used their parents’ favoritism to occupy the family wealth and drove him out, bullying him in various ways. He would have Wei Dongcheng pay for it, making his brother know what retribution felt like!

He meticulously placed food for Wei Dongcheng, showing concern for his progress with Xu Zhizhi, suggesting they should get married soon. Wei Dongcheng’s eyes sparkled with excitement as he constantly nodded, picking up his chopsticks to eat.

“Thank you, Uncle!” he admired while looking at Wei Sheng.

Wei Sheng concealed the annoyance and malice in his eyes, continuing to serve him food, while casting cold glances at his wife. Wei Sheng’s wife felt a twinge of pain on one side of her face and hurriedly added more food to Wei Dongcheng’s bowl, “Dongcheng, eat more, and come over often in the future.”

    Wei Dongcheng nodded eagerly.

The meal lasted two hours, and finally, under the couple’s escort, Wei Dongcheng reluctantly left. He felt averse to going back to his shabby, two-story little building, which not only lacked decoration but was also in a terribly dilapidated state. He wanted to live in a big villa, driving his uncle’s sports car around daily, wearing all sorts of designer clothes.

Chasing after Xu Zhizhi was the best time he had experienced; previously, he had hardly any money and had to rely on his uncle’s name to show off or mooch off a few meals. It seemed that Xu Zhizhi was his lucky star, and later he could ask his uncle for some money to propose to her. With Xu Zhizhi as the backbone, managing the business would be easy, wouldn’t it be great?

Thinking of a beautiful future, he lay on his Sleep Number bed and began to dream. In a daze, he dreamed of Xu Zhizhi marrying him, having children, and making tons of money! One wall wouldn’t hold it all; his house would be made entirely of money!

She even encouraged him to find other women, those beautiful women who would throw themselves at him one after another. It was too wonderful; Wei Dongcheng couldn’t help but laugh.

Until a strong push jolted him awake from his dream, forcing him to confront the stark reality. Before he could feel disappointed, his father shouted angrily, “Over at the villa… your uncle’s villa… a lot of police came! Your uncle has been arrested!”

The middle-aged man was panting, but he still clearly explained the situation. The smile left Wei Dongcheng’s face, and he stared dumbfounded at his father.

“What? What are you saying!” he thought he had misheard; his uncle had been just fine at dinner—how could he possibly be arrested now!?

The middle-aged man swallowed hard, repeating what had happened, adding, “We all saw it; there were police cars everywhere.”

Wei Dongcheng remained dazed, thinking he must not be fully awake! Was this a dream?!

“Slap!” He slapped himself hard across the face.

Wei Dongcheng’s father cast a worried glance at his child. “What are you doing? You’re not involved, right? If you are, hurry up and run; lay low for a few years and this thing will blow over.”

His brother could take the fall, but he shouldn’t drag his only son into it.

“Right! Right! I need to run!” Wei Dongcheng’s father’s words shocked him back to clarity, and he immediately realized he needed to escape.

He knew where that den was, and he had previously taken fake antiques from his uncle to sell. When they traced it back to him, he would inevitably face a few years in jail. He had heard from friends in the social underbelly that inside was not a place fit for humans; he had to hide! Just as his father said—after a few years, nobody would investigate this matter again.

Only someone like Wei Sheng would be the key target for arrest.

Thinking of this, he quickly tossed off the bed, got dressed, grabbed a knife, and stuffed all the cash he held into a backpack.

His father was still nearby advising Wei Dongcheng on how to hide, reminding him to wait for nightfall before returning.

Wei Dongcheng nodded while glancing at his tearful mother, “Don’t worry; I will return and make a lot of money to support you.”

“Alright, I don’t have much time left; I’m leaving now.”

He swung the backpack over his shoulder, picked up the mask he had bought to show off when riding his motorcycle, and pulled up the hood of his black hoodie.

Under the watchful eyes of the Wei couple, he quickly rode off on his motorcycle.

He didn’t leave the city as he told his parents, but rather quickly thought and headed to the hotel where Xu Zhizhi was staying.

The events made his brain work faster; he understood that relying on himself, he certainly couldn’t promise his parents anything. He had to take Xu Zhizhi with him; with her technical support, his success would become astoundingly easier.

Besides, since Xu Zhizhi liked him, as Xu Zhizhi’s boyfriend, he naturally couldn’t leave her alone to face the police’s questioning.

After parking the motorcycle in a secluded alley, he adjusted the mask over his face and tightened the hood before heading into the hotel.

Hotel staff were usually asleep at midnight, but he had frequently brought women here before. Especially since he used to drink with the night security guard often, he was very familiar with the hotel’s ins and outs.

For instance, the universal key card that could open all rooms was in the first drawer of the front desk. The duty staff would be asleep, and he just needed to act quietly to snag a key from them, take the card from the drawer, and open all the rooms.

Just as he imagined, everything went smoothly because the hotel had never anticipated someone would act this way in the middle of the night. Some situations he could even knock and enter; the management of hotels in small, remote cities was extremely lax.

Wei Dongcheng didn’t directly knock; one, he feared being discovered, and two, he knew Xu Zhizhi’s character. She might not agree to leave with him.

Regarding Xu Zhizhi’s room, after these ten or so days of interaction, he was already very familiar. With the universal card in hand, he went straight to Room 206 and swiped it open.

As the door opened and he entered, he took a few steps forward. With the dim light from the bedside lamp, he directly locked eyes with Xu Zhizhi, who stood by the window.

Xu Zhizhi’s lips parted slightly, and shock caused her to step back several paces. No matter how strong her mental endurance was, seeing a man suddenly enter the room would trigger immense fear.

She didn’t scream; after all, screaming would only provoke the person on the other side and wouldn’t provide any clues to save her. Moreover, the hotel had good soundproofing, and no one would hear her crying out in the middle of the night.

She stepped back toward her bedside, where her phone and the ring from Qin Su lay.

“Who are you?” Xu Zhizhi carefully retreated, eyeing the man suspiciously, her gaze falling onto the small knife gleaming faintly in his hand.

Could it be that the filming incident was exposed, and he was here seeking revenge? But only Qin Su and a few team members knew about that filming—their reasons to collude with others were baseless.

Maybe someone had been sent to follow her, discovering what she did?

Xu Zhizhi’s mind raced as she thought of ways to persuade him, or perhaps pay him off.

Just then, as she was lost in thought, the man removed his hood and pulled down his mask, “Zhizhi, it’s me, I’m here to take you away. The police have already taken away my uncle and his family, and they’ve rounded up everything at the factory.”

His tone held urgency as he approached and grabbed Xu Zhizhi forcefully.

“What?” Xu Zhizhi questioned, fully understanding the meaning behind his words; this back-and-forth was just stalling for time. But his uncle
