Chapter 1: Rebirth and Awakening
“Gurgles……”
In the morning, Lu Qing awoke to the rumbling of his stomach.
Feeling the pangs of hunger, he sighed and rubbed his belly.
“Even if you growl, it won’t help. Where am I going to get food?”
Looking around at the dilapidated house, barely more than four walls, Lu Qing gave a wry smile.
Others transmigrate, he transmigrates, but he can’t even fill his belly. What kind of situation is this?
He had been lying in bed for two days.
Two days ago, Lu Qing opened his eyes and found himself in this unknown world.
His clothes were ragged, he was emaciated, and even his body had changed; he had become a ten-year-old boy.
After spending some time, Lu Qing figured out his situation.
He had transmigrated.
Reborn into the body of a boy who had recently lost both parents. After selling off his family’s belongings to bury them, he was too weak and overcome with grief to survive a cold night.
Perhaps, for the original owner, this was a kind of liberation.
After absorbing the memories in his mind, this was Lu Qing’s first thought.
For a teenager, surviving in this world is too difficult.
Death might not be a bad thing.
But…
“Brother, you’re awake!”
Lu Qing’s thoughts were suddenly interrupted by an excited shout.
He turned his head and saw a little girl of five or six years old, holding a gray object, standing at the doorway, looking at him with a surprised face.
The little girl scurried to Lu Qing, “Brother, are you better?”
“Yes, I’m better, Xiao Yan doesn’t need to worry anymore.” Lu Qing smiled gently.
“That’s great, Brother, you’re finally better!” Hearing Lu Qing say he was fine, the little girl’s eyes instantly reddened, and tears streamed down her face. “These past two days, your face has been red and hot, and you kept calling out cold. I didn’t know what to do, no matter how I called you, you didn’t respond. I thought you were going to leave Xiao Yan just like Father and Mother!”
Seeing the little girl crying, Lu Qing felt a pang of heartache.
For the past two days, he had been integrating the memories in his mind, appearing to be in a coma. Although he could barely sense the outside world, his consciousness couldn’t remain clear.
Except for waking up briefly several times, he quickly fell back into unconsciousness.
He vaguely heard the little girl’s cries, but he couldn’t respond.
Lu Qing reached out and stroked the little girl’s dry, yellow hair: “It’s Brother’s fault. Brother promises he won’t get sick again and worry Xiao Yan, okay?”
“Okay.” Xiao Yan burst into tears of joy, holding out her small hand. “Then let’s pinky swear.”
Lu Qing extended his pinky finger and hooked it with Xiao Yan’s.
“Pinky swear, pinky swear, a hundred years won’t change, whoever changes is a puppy!”
After the pinky swear, Xiao Yan immediately cheered up.
In her little head, since they had pinky sworn, things wouldn’t change, and her brother wouldn’t get sick again.
“Xiao Yan, what’s that in your hand?”
Lu Qing noticed the thing in the little girl’s hand.
“It’s a steamed bun, Brother, don’t you recognize it?” Xiao Yan held the gray thing in both hands, offering it to Lu Qing happily. “This is from Old Man Zhang next door. Xiao Yan didn’t want to eat it alone, so I wanted to bring it back to eat with Brother, and I didn’t expect to see Brother get better when I came back.”
“A steamed bun?”
Lu Qing looked at the grayish thing; it was quite different from the steamed buns he remembered.
However, considering that he was in another world, he felt relieved.
Since even the world is different, it’s not surprising that the steamed buns have changed.
As he thought this, Lu Qing’s gaze lingered on the gray steamed bun for a few seconds, and suddenly, a line of text appeared.
[Coarse Grain Steamed Bun: Made from rice bran, wheat flour, and wild vegetables, limited nutrition.]
At the same time, the bun emitted a gray light.
What is this?
Lu Qing was startled. He blinked, and found that the line of text remained on the gray steamed bun and did not disappear.
It seems it’s not an illusion…
Before Lu Qing could investigate further, Xiao Yan held the gray steamed bun and brought it to his mouth.
“Brother, eat. Chen Grandfather said that after someone gets sick and gets better, they need to eat to nourish their body.”
Lu Qing smelled the grain aroma from the gray steamed bun. He was already starving; the feeling of hunger swept over him again.
He didn’t act coy. After taking it, he tore off half and put it back into Xiao Yan’s hand.
“Yes, Xiao Yan, eat too.”
He hadn’t forgotten that the little girl had said the bun was given to her, and she wanted to share it with him.
Unexpectedly, the little girl shook her head and stuffed the half-bun back into Lu Qing’s hand: “Brother eat, Xiao Yan is not hungry. Brother just got better, eat more so your body will recover faster.”
Although she said so, Lu Qing clearly saw the little girl’s throat involuntarily swallow as she handed back the bun.
He looked at the little girl’s dry, yellow hair and felt a pang of pity. He again put the half-bun back into her hand.
“Brother just got better and can’t eat too much at once, otherwise my stomach won’t feel good. So Xiao Yan should eat this half.”
“Is that so?” The little girl held the half-bun and tilted her head. “But that seems different from what Chen Grandfather said.”
“People who have just recovered from a serious illness shouldn’t overeat. If you don’t believe me, ask Chen Grandfather next time, and see if it’s true.” Lu Qing said.
“Okay.” The little girl nodded, seemingly understanding.
She didn’t realize that a simple coarse grain steamed bun has nothing to do with overeating.
Lu Qing took advantage of the opportunity to continue to coax her: “Since Brother can’t finish it, Xiao Yan can eat it with Brother. Otherwise, the bun will get cold and won’t taste good.”
“Hmm!” Xiao Yan nodded heavily. “Since Brother can’t finish it, Xiao Yan will help Brother eat.”
The siblings ate their respective halves of the bun contentedly.
Soon, Lu Qing finished his half of the bun. His empty stomach finally had something to fill it, and a warmth rose from his belly, making him feel much more energetic.
To be fair, the bun didn’t taste very good, but it was substantial and quite large.
So even though it was only half, it lessened Lu Qing’s hunger, no longer making his head dizzy and limbs weak.
Seeing Xiao Yan still diligently munching on the bun, Lu Qing didn’t disturb her and turned his attention to something else.
He recalled the line of text that had appeared on the bun earlier.
After a moment of thought, Lu Qing stood up, walked to the table, and picked up a chipped bowl.
He placed it in front of him and stared at it quietly.
After a few seconds, he saw a layer of gray light appear on the bowl, along with a line of text.
[Damaged Earthenware Bowl: A damaged earthenware bowl that doesn’t seem very clean.]
As expected. A slight smile appeared on Lu Qing’s face.
