Landing 500 Years Early, I Became a God by Digging for Treasures 121
by adminChapter 120: Becoming a Demon? (Extra Chapter for Monthly Ticket!)
What followed was a prolonged war of attrition.
When Lu Yuan was awake, he used his astral space abilities to protect everyone. When he was exhausted, the others used firearms and artillery to protect Lu Yuan, allowing him to recover his mental strength.
In the hopeless darkness, the enemy would occasionally launch surprise attacks. Even if the attacks weren’t powerful, often just probing offensives, they were still incredibly draining.
Even though Lu Yuan could solve most of the problems, whenever he was touched, eyes would sprout from his flesh.
The six Rize soldiers gradually began to suffer mental breakdowns. There was no way to stop the process.
Even more terrifying was the dwindling ammunition, signaling the end of this war of attrition.
“I can’t hold on… I have a feeling that once I fall asleep, I’ll lose control and plunge into the darkness,” said the Rize soldier with the “Eagle Eye” ability. At this moment, he had 26 eyes all over his body, looking like a monster covered in eyeballs. Even with his Transcendent Fire Seed, he couldn’t resist the mental erosion.
The others felt the same.
“Don’t be afraid… even if I become a monster, will my Transcendent Fire Seed still exist?”
“It will,” Old Cat, ever the rational one, said, “The Monster won’t erase your soul; it needs your abilities to fight.”
“That’s good. It’s okay. Even if I become a monster, I can still pass on the flame.”
“Our civilization’s Transcendent Fire Seeds are dead… but if I become a monster, can I still pass on the flame? I have to pass the flame on… they found me… they killed me, I have a fire seed.” The eyeball on Eagle Eye’s forehead bulged out, scarlet and eerie, looking as if it might go berserk at any moment.
“Brothers, it’s up to you… Mr. Lu, it’s up to you…”
In the midst of this sad atmosphere, Lu Yuan understood his meaning. If the Monster died, everything in the astral space would fall into the real world. Perhaps some of it would fall into the safe zone? Then, this branch of civilization could kill the monstrous Eagle Eye and regain the Transcendent Fire Seed. Of course, this was a low-probability event, just a slim possibility.
He merely sighed slightly: “Comrade, your guess is correct. Don’t worry about causing us trouble, you’ve done very well, you are a true warrior.”
Eagle Eye shouted, “I will run… I will run to the end of the second level, find a corner to hide.”
“Our civilization will find me.”
“It will find me…” Eagle Eye’s voice grew lower and lower, “Come, mark me, quickly, I can’t hold on much longer.”
Lu Yuan used a fluorescent pen to etch a pattern on him. This was a pen made from a plant called “fluorescent grass,” with the characteristic of “weak luminescence,” sufficient even in this environment.
Farewell always comes suddenly. After Eagle Eye closed his eyes, and opened them again, his once bright eyes were pitch black. He had lost his senses, becoming a servant of the Monster.
Everyone instinctively avoided looking at him, only hearing him stand up, followed by the sound of “tap tap” footsteps. He rushed into the darkness and never returned…
“It’s alright, actually, coming here, we were already prepared to die,” said the Rize person with superhuman strength, named Xida. He was also covered in eyes, and couldn’t hold on much longer, yet he was still comforting his comrades, “We’ve already obtained so much information, our mission is already complete… this is already the best outcome.”
“Even if we can’t kill the Monster, with this information, we will kill it someday.”
“As long as we kill it, our fire seeds can be passed back.”
“Yes!” The other few soldiers laughed.
…
Days passed, and one by one, the soldiers suffered mental breakdowns, rushing into the darkness. Until the sixteenth day, only two Rize soldiers remained: Tadu, the telepath, and Xi Te, the healer. By now, they were essentially at the end of their rope, their machine guns out of ammunition, forced to fight with melee weapons. Even Lu Yuan himself had seventeen or eighteen eyes growing on him, feeling incredibly muddled, as if an extra will had appeared in his body, trying to take over everything.
It was on this day that a mysterious thought came from a very distant direction. The Fruit of Life was fully ripe! He gained an extra life!
“If we don’t make a final stand, we’ll just die slowly,” Lu Yuan made up his mind, “Old Cat and I will try to go underground. Success or death.”
“Tadu, transfer your telepathy to me, I’ll tell you all the information.”
“You stay here, my dog will stay with you…”
“Understood.”
Telepathy could only sense one person at a time. Tadu cut contact with the rear, transferring his senses to Lu Yuan. Old Wolf emerged from the tent; to this day, it still had no eyes—this seemed to prove that the Monster didn’t care about low-intelligence lifeforms.
“We’ll win.”
Lu Yuan patted Old Wolf’s head and flicked its two mutated eggs: “After the astral space disappears, the entire cave will appear in the real world. If you fall into the safe zone, the Rize people will take care of you. If you fall into the Pangu Continent, travel with me.”
Old Wolf didn’t understand; it only knew its master wanted it to stay here.
Lu Yuan stuffed a few high-explosive bombs into his backpack, waved his hand, “Then, friends, take care!!”
He walked deeper into the cave. Because he had so many eyes, he could see the entrance to the third level. A thicker fog permeated this area; there weren’t even any monsters to stop him. Perhaps the Monster truly hoped that some creatures would enter deeper levels. Only by entering deeper levels could one achieve greater potential.
“Old Cat, it’s just the two of us again… the road ahead is unknown.”
“I can’t see,” Old Cat said.
“What?”
“I can’t sense my surroundings, there’s a strong idealistic interference here,” Old Cat said, “The instruments are being jammed, you can’t rely on me too much…”
“I wasn’t planning on relying on you,” Lu Yuan snorted coldly.
“Are you still hiding your Divine Technique? Those few moves might be useless against the Monster.”
“Just watch if my hidden techniques are useful…”
The third level was truly terrifying. Cold, damp.
Lu Yuan quickly encountered a small monster he couldn’t defeat. A bluish-black small arm appeared from somewhere, grabbing Lu Yuan’s hand; an icy power flowed continuously into his body.
“Hm?”
Lu Yuan’s expression changed slightly; he quickly activated his Transcendent Fire Seed, deflecting the icy hand. But soon, a searing pain came from his hand; he had another eye.
“It’s not that it’s getting stronger, it’s that my ability value is dropping,” the information flashed through his mind, “Normally, this kind of thing… I’d kill several of them.”
The small monster with empty eye sockets stared at him eerily, giving him several more eyes before disappearing into the darkness. With these new eyes, he could see the entrance to the fourth level.
“The Monster really wants stronger servants, it’s probably got its eyes on you, Ninth Epoch’s original warrior.”
“How many levels does this damn thing have?!” Lu Yuan cursed, even as a level three Transcendent being, having so many eyes made him expend a lot of mental energy just to fight the extra will. He could only grit his teeth and continue.
The passage here sloped downwards, as if leading to a dark, hellish abyss. Along the way, he could see dark eyes embedded in the walls. This place wasn’t quite real, it was more like a void, with those eyes like stars. This slanted tunnel was unknownly long.
Unknowingly, Lu Yuan grew more eyes. Probably fifty or sixty… there was no need to count anymore. He saw the entrance to the fifth level, and a strong sense of despair filled his heart.
“Tadu, can you hear me?”
“I can hear you!”
“There’s actually a fifth level! But there are no more monsters on the fourth level… maybe there are no suitable candidates…”
“I’ve reached the fifth level now; if I become a monster, I’ll definitely be a high-authority figure,” Lu Yuan said self-deprecatingly, “Will I be guarding this level then?”
“I’m a bit delirious, I see my relatives, and my first love. The darkness feels increasingly familiar.”
The telepath, Tadu, laboriously recorded the information with pen and paper, simply preparing for those who came after. The gap between the second and fifth levels was truly like a chasm.
“Lu Yuan, you’ve reached your limit,” Old Cat, ever rational, said, “You’re delirious. Even if the Monster’s core is on the fifth level, you still can’t defeat it.”
“Now, it might be personally adding more eyes to your body, and you can’t even react.”
“It’s so damn hopeless…”
Lu Yuan gasped for breath, sweat constantly flowing down his back. Tension, fear, trembling, all emotions poured out. His current appearance, no matter which civilization he went to, would be a Lovecraftian monster that would terrify children…
Lu Yuan gave a wry smile, sat on the ground, then found he couldn’t stand up, the hallucinations in his mind vying for control of his body. He was very sleepy now, and if he fell asleep, he would never wake up again. It felt like a rat trapped on the tracks, waiting for execution, with a train speeding towards it in the distance. No matter how hard it struggled, it couldn’t avoid being crushed to a pulp; only a plump rat tail stood high, signifying its past resistance against this damned fate.
“Sir… are you, are you still alive? Still conscious?” Tadu suddenly said through the telepathy.
“Still alive, but I can’t go down to the fifth level… I can’t even beat ordinary monsters now.”
“The only way is to crawl down…”
“I also have a sister,” Tadu was rambling, “I’m not very close to her, but now I miss her a little… I haven’t done anything wrong to her, I’m really like a lunatic… I have a wife and children…”
“Actually, family relationships in our Rize civilization are quite complex because everyone is egg-born, and upbringing is based on clans.”
“…The feelings with brothers and sisters are deeper…” He was already delirious, talking nonsense.
“I will win, I will.”
“Don’t worry about your sister,” Lu Yuan took out the Demon’s remains from his backpack. His gums oozed blood.
This time, he really couldn’t do anything. Although he had snatched a victory by killing a Demon, facing the Monster, he had absolutely no chance. The Monster’s power and the despair it wrought far surpassed his imagination; the limits of the flesh could not be overcome by spiritual will. At this moment, he had absolutely no way out…
