    Chapter 20: Old Wolf’s Relay

“Damn it, this thing is incredibly strong!”

In just a few minutes, Lu Yuan was drenched in sweat. It wasn’t the heat of the sun; strenuous exercise had caused a massive buildup of lactic acid in his muscles, leading to terrible fatigue.

His lungs ached intensely from the heavy breathing.

“Awooo~ Awooo!!” Old Wolf’s howls echoed from a distance. Seeing its master being chased, it was frantic with worry but dared not approach.

That fire lizard was too powerful; one slap could turn the wolf into mincemeat.

Lu Yuan mustered all his willpower, summoning every ounce of human courage, and raced against the poisoned fire lizard.

The beast’s speed exceeded his expectations. It was already behind him, lunging.

He still hadn’t reached his destination.

There were still four hundred meters to go. Even a world-class athlete would need 40 seconds.

Exhausted, he needed at least a minute and a half.

The fading sun cast their shadows long and slanted.

Lu Yuan saw the beast’s shadow engulfing him, like a demonic claw from hell, reaching for his flesh.

Wind, rain, and the last rays of the setting sun mingled to create a cruel chill.

    “Am I going to die?”

Lu Yuan felt a pang of sadness. He had given his all; his legs felt like lead, his speed nowhere near what it had been.

He felt no resentment, only a sense of frustration at his own weakness.

But he was hesitant to activate “Astral Space.”

Once he activated it, the intense poison might drive the beast back to its lair to recover.

Once the fire lizard recovered from the poison, Lu Yuan wouldn’t get another chance.

After all, he only had one spider venom gland.

Without the poison, he stood absolutely no chance.

“Come on, come eat your grandpa!”

    “Roar!”

    Death was imminent!

    The fire lizard lunged forward.

Lu Yuan gritted his teeth, planted his rough fingers on his steel spear, and used the recoil to jump several meters sideways.

    The wind roared past him.

The fire lizard landed where he had just been.

The immense inertia sent its massive body rolling forward for ten meters, smashing several boulders.

Some fragments hit Lu Yuan’s head, blood streaming from his eyes.

He scrambled to his feet and continued running towards his destination.

But that was all he could manage.

The fire lizard also rose again.

The four hundred meters remained an insurmountable chasm. Dodging once was sheer luck; with such a massive speed difference, he couldn’t hope to avoid a second attack.

    Human effort has its limits.

    “Is this the end?”

The sun sank slowly, the wind and rain intensified. A darkly humorous sky watched over humanity, as it had watched countless heroes die – it was always neutral.

Then, Lu Yuan heard a wolf howl.

The howl was incredibly loud, a defiant curse.

    He saw Old Wolf!!

    “Aooooooooo!!!”

Old Wolf finally crossed the line, launching a ferocious spiritual roar at the fire lizard.

The she-wolves hid behind, howling wildly: “Aooooooooo!”

The combined howls were a blatant provocation.

Old Wolf was a very intelligent wolf.

It knew where the traps were and that Lu Yuan couldn’t possibly lure the fire lizard into one.

So, it attempted a relay for the final stretch.

Its old bones would have to run!

“Don’t die!! I’ll hide first.” Lu Yuan’s nose twitched, accepting Old Wolf’s help, and activated Astral Space.

A thin ripple of water enveloped him.

The fire lizard found its hateful target gone, and heard even more irritating wolf howls nearby.

This damned ant dared to challenge it?

It charged forward, intent on crushing these weak, infuriating creatures.

    Old Wolf turned and ran.

It was terrified, running as fast as it could, so scared it even soiled itself. Fortunately, the trap wasn’t far, and it reached the edge after a short sprint.

It hesitated, unsure if its old bones could jump the trap.

The fire lizard roared towards it, like a dump truck charging at Old Wolf!

Lu Yuan’s heart clenched. His eyes blurred as he heard a terrible howl.

He saw Old Wolf flung ten meters, landing in the bushes.

The fire lizard crashed into the trap with a “boom.”

Several boulders hanging from the poles thundered down into the pit, smashing it bloody.

    “Got it?!”

Lu Yuan immediately deactivated Astral Space and charged forward with his spear.

The huge beast thrashed in the trap; several sharp spears pierced its abdomen, spurting crimson blood.

    “Roar!!”

[A wounded and poisoned lizard-type Transcendent being. The abdominal wound appears serious.]

[However, its vitality remains strong; the wound is slowly closing.]

    [You still cannot kill it.]

Lu Yuan looked at Old Wolf, lying motionless in the bushes.

    “Old Wolf!!!”

He was consumed by rage, trembling, fury welling up from his chest.

    “I still haven’t won, still haven’t…”

But he had exhausted all his resources; he was powerless.

Soon, the fire lizard would break free from the vine net and climb out of the trap. Wherever it went, he would be no match for it.

Overwhelming despair enveloped Lu Yuan, as if the weight of the world pressed down on his shoulders.

He racked his brains, but couldn’t think of a solution.

The next second, he saw the spear in his hand.

A spear forged from sharpened steel rebar.

The rain intensified, shrouding everything in mist.

In the end, he had to rely on himself.

Humans can only rely on themselves.

“Life is less than thirty years,” Lu Yuan murmured softly, “like a dream, like an illusion. Those who once lived, how can they not perish?”

A bolt of lightning illuminated the world.

He gripped his spear, leaped, and jumped into the trap.

    “I’ll borrow your fire seed!”

He landed directly on the fire lizard’s massive body.

Lu Yuan roared like a beast, the sharp spear a blur as he viciously stabbed towards the fire lizard’s eye.

Hot, scalding liquid sprayed onto Lu Yuan.

The fire lizard thrashed wildly, “Roar!!”

The entire pit collapsed, sand and stones pelting Lu Yuan’s face.

Then, a cloud-burst-like explosion of flame erupted!

Intense heat generated vast quantities of steam, shrouding the surroundings in a thick fog.

This was the fire lizard’s ability: fire breath!
