    Chapter 5: Discovering City Ruins!

    Found… a garbage can!

A large, sturdy, brownish garbage can, nearly a meter tall, covered in mold and insects. Lu Yuan found a large crack at the bottom of the garbage can and regretfully left it behind.

    “Broken, what a pity.”

    Discovered a dangerous creature!

It looked like a leopard, with a coat of money spots (a type of leopard marking), sharp claws and teeth. But unlike a leopard, it had a sharp horn growing on its head.

The creature hissed menacingly at Lu Yuan.

Lu Yuan spread his arms, pretending to look fierce, and threw a recently picked-up aluminum can at it.

With a “clatter,” the can landed on the ground.

The leopard was startled, probably thinking its enemy wasn’t easy to deal with, and ran away.

“If you dare come near, I’ll eat leopard meat today!” Lu Yuan was actually terrified.

    He loudly threatened it.

But he also felt his “terrifying upright ape” genes were awakening.

He had been planning to use the “Astral Space” to trick it if it attacked, but it actually ran away.

Lu Yuan vaguely realized his mindset was different from the past. It was possibly a nihilistic attitude—dead is dead.

Or perhaps an adaptation to the environment; he had to hunt!

If he couldn’t overcome this difficulty, he would only have death to choose!

Discovered an insect nest and 10,000 unknown insects!

They looked like bees, only much larger; each one was about the size of a ping-pong ball, buzzing in flight.

The largest insect was actually a meter tall!

Facing a colony of creatures, Lu Yuan dared not provoke them and could only stay far away.

This unknown civilization was extinct for at least several hundred, perhaps thousands of years. Not a single complete corpse could be found.

Nature had reclaimed the abandoned city. Plants grew wildly, concrete pavements heaved in places, and buildings were almost completely collapsed.

Only some artificial objects remained intact.

Especially plastics, which degrade slowly, are best preserved.

Glass and ceramics too, as long as they don’t weather, can be preserved almost permanently.

“If humanity were to go extinct, this would be the scene in a few hundred years, wouldn’t it?”

“Of humanity’s seventeen cities, how many will remain?”

    Found… a giant carnivorous plant!

Its spiked foliage spread over a kilometer, and the purple main stem was as tall as a 100-meter building, with poppy-like flowers blooming brilliantly.

【A carnivorous plant with supernatural powers. Its red fruits are rich in nutrients needed for human growth.】

【Unfortunately, you, with your mediocre skills, are no match for it. If you approach, you will become its corpse within two hours.】

Lu Yuan murmured: “No wonder there’s a large area of golden and red auras here… it’s a carnivorous plant.”

Each fruit was as big as a soccer ball!

    The smell… so fragrant!

It was like a mixture of grapes and mangoes, making Lu Yuan swallow his saliva repeatedly.

He swore he had never smelled such a sweet fragrance; every cell in his body trembled slightly, craving the nutrients within!

A bird happened to fly by, attracted by the fruit.

    Whoosh!

A purplish-red vine shot out like lightning, grabbing the bird and pulling it down!

The pouch-shaped flower quickly closed, enveloping the bird.

The bird only cried out once before falling silent.

Lu Yuan shivered, and began to pray: “God, if you let just one fruit fall, I’ll be your devout follower today!”

    “Please, God!”

He waited a long time, but no fruit fell.

His remaining rationality made Lu Yuan leave with heavy steps…

“Screw you, God, you won’t even give me this.”

Picked up 42 red wild berries, each about the size of a peanut.

【Slightly nutritious, uninteresting fruits. Non-toxic, but the taste… even dogs wouldn’t eat them.】

    “Dogs won’t eat them, but I will…”

Lu Yuan actually cleaned them and carefully ate them.

The taste… was incredibly fishy and pungent, a bit like fish herb. Lu Yuan ate one and almost vomited his stomach acid.

Actually, when you’re hungry, the taste doesn’t matter.

[The following line appears to be a nonsensical string of characters and is omitted in translation]

“Besides, I don’t have to chew, right? I’ll just swallow them.”

He desperately wanted to find something to fill his stomach.

Why did ancient starving people eat观音土 (Guanyin soil, a type of clay sometimes eaten by starving people, leading to death) and eat themselves to death?

Because extreme hunger does lower intelligence.

The sun was high, and Lu Yuan estimated he hadn’t eaten a proper meal for 24 hours.

If he couldn’t find anything to eat, he’d have to go back to eating grass roots and insects.

But grass roots didn’t contain much energy, and insects didn’t have many calories. His physical condition would get worse and worse. It was better to use his remaining strength to find something better.

With this determination, Lu Yuan once again mustered his courage and walked a few kilometers further.

In the deepest part of the canyon, he saw a large area of collapsed houses, glowing with green and gold lights, indicating that there was a large amount of treasure buried there.

    “I’ve found city ruins!”

Lu Yuan’s heart leaped with excitement, and his pace quickened.

He casually dug into the ground and unearthed a gold necklace.

Even this alien civilization seemed to consider gold a luxury.

The necklace was quite exquisite, carved with rose-like patterns, weighing at least five hundred grams.

    “I’ll… get this later.”

Lu Yuan casually threw the gold necklace on the ground; the extra weight of a kilogram was more than he could bear.

Finding proper food in this area of ruins was difficult, even canned food, vacuum-sealed, would have rotted after a few hundred years.

Moreover, there were occasional flashes of red light in this area, so it wasn’t without risk.

So, after wandering around for half a day, he chose the largest and most intact building.

The thick reinforced concrete layers had saved it from the huge disaster, and its shape was a heavy circle.

Lu Yuan had a feeling this was a shelter; maybe there was food inside, or even living intelligent beings?

They could share their feelings, talk about their hardships?

Would the local natives eat him?

Oh well, let’s have a good meal first.

【A thick mechanical door, even without electricity, can still be opened. The password is 8872134.】

Lu Yuan was surprised, “Is this eye so powerful?”

To this day, he still didn’t understand the true principle of the “Explorer’s Eye”.

The buttons of this unknown civilization were naturally not Arabic numerals, but the buttons seemed to be consecutive, so it was easy to figure them out.
