    Chapter 50: Winter Hunt

My thick leather coat was still quite warm, but the forest air was damp, making the cold feel piercing. The relentless chill seeped through the gaps in my clothing, relentlessly crawling into my pores.

If it weren’t absolutely necessary, I would much rather be inside, warming myself by the fire and reading.

The reason I’m out here is to take advantage of winter’s dormant season and score big!

In winter, there are no pesky insects, no venomous snakes or thorny bushes everywhere – isn’t it the perfect time to scavenge?

The thought of scavenging invigorated me. My eyes sparkled, and I quickened my pace.

A profound silence reigned (Silence of the Wilderness), broken only by the soft “shush, shush” of my boots crunching on the snow.

With my shield in my left hand and my dagger in my right, I felt a surge of boldness, a sense of conquering nature.

Speaking of which, even the pack of wolves I keep has started hibernating.

Wolves on Earth don’t actually hibernate, but the wolves of the Pangu Continent have evolved this ability to survive the harsh environment.

Before winter arrived, these guys ate ravenously, even gnawing on grass, fattening themselves up.

Their fur grew longer and longer.

When the heavy snow arrived, the wolf pack dug a mud den, and big and little wolves huddled together for warmth.

Now, the snow layer is getting thicker, serving as a cozy blanket.

“Awoo?” the alpha wolf, who stayed by my side, let out a call.

It was puzzled. Why are you out here in the dead of winter? You’ll freeze to death, wolf!

The alpha wolf hadn’t hibernated like the others.

After all, hibernation is merely a way to reduce energy consumption.

Now that it’s essentially my dog and food is plentiful, it doesn’t need to hibernate.

“Hey, look over there!” I narrowed my eyes, spotting a large mound, a gigantic plant towering two hundred meters high, standing atop it. The tree was laden with what looked like enormous ears of corn.

[Medium Transcendent Plant, Poales order, Poaceae family, Zea mays.]

[A giant corn plant at least a thousand years old, evolved from a herbaceous plant into a perennial woody plant. Its fruits and seeds contain abundant nutrients.]

I’ve been eyeing this thing for a long time!

But wherever there’s treasure, there’s always a guardian.

This corn isn’t like a carnivorous plant with offensive capabilities. If it didn’t have a guardian, wild animals would have devoured it long ago.

On the ruins of the Midea Civilization cities, besides the big bosses and smaller bosses, there are naturally some low-level Transcendent creatures.

In the hollow of the corn tree, a giant bear slumbered, guarding this colossal corn plant.

[Strong Pangu Grey Bear, 2.8 meters tall, weighing nearly a ton.]

[Bear-type creature, known for its thick skin, immense strength, capable of killing a wolf with one paw swipe.]

[This brown bear, due to its long-term consumption of corn, has evolved Transcendent abilities, thus considered a Transcendent lifeform.]

    [Physique: 17.8-19.2]

    [Qi: 6.9-8.2]

    [Spirit: 1.1-1.4]

[Abilities: Herculean Strength, significantly increases strength for a short period.]

    [Transcendent Grade: Level 1.]

Looking at that exaggerated Physique attribute, nearing 20, it’s truly monstrous!

This bear’s Transcendent Grade is about the same as mine; I don’t want to fight it head-on.

Getting a massage from its paw isn’t something to joke about.

“You go distract it, I’ll steal the corn,” I turned to the wolf, outlining our battle plan.

The alpha wolf’s keen animal instincts sensed danger; its legs trembled, and it almost bolted.

“Look at you, such a coward! It’s just a level 1 Transcendent creature!” I patted its behind, urging it forward.

The alpha wolf wore an expression of utter despair, one eye fixed on me with resignation.

    Boss, I’m level 0!

Using the same trap method I used for the fire lizards for a safe hunt isn’t impossible.

But lately, I’ve been immersed in cultivation, and spending half a month setting up traps just to hunt a dumb bear isn’t worth it.

Besides, I have plenty of fire lizard meat. If I eat a pound a day, it’ll last me 1800 days, and it’s much higher quality than level 1 bear meat!

On the other hand, it’s a mother bear with two cubs.

One brown cub, and one yellow cub.

While survival of the fittest is the norm in this land, as a human, I don’t really want to see “Bear Brother” and “Bear Two” lose their mother.

“Let’s just steal some corn while they’re asleep.”

As for my three attributes, my diligent cultivation over these months has naturally yielded significant improvements.

    [Physique: 10.4]

    [Qi: 8.3]

    [Spirit: 7.9]

    [Transcendent Grade: Level 1.]

I slightly bent my arm, clenching my fist. My biceps bulged with powerful curves. The abundant strength filled me with confidence.

No one would have imagined that seven months ago, I was just an ordinary person.

But seven months later, I’m a minor superhuman!

My jumping ability, strength, and running speed all far surpass human limits.

My Transcendent Grade is still Level 1, but according to the Midea Civilization’s explanation, once cultivation reaches a certain level, and the Transcendent Fire Seed undergoes a transformation, one can ascend to Level 2.

I have a feeling that this stage is not far off.

Of course, I’ve noticed that my cultivation speed seems to have slowed down.

The first full attribute increase took two weeks.

Now, the second full attribute increase took four weeks.

The third full attribute increase took six weeks.

This is normal. Each attribute increase becomes more difficult.

For ordinary citizens of the Midea Civilization, the time it takes to increase one attribute is measured in years, or even decades.

Only a few geniuses can do it in months.

With the Fiery Red Crystal Stone and the lizard meat, I’m doing it in weeks.

Thinking carefully, my “Transcendent Flame” ability is only average. Without external resources, I’d be unremarkable, the kind who cultivates their whole life without making any waves.

Luckily, I have enough external resources. Even if I’m a complete waste, I can still pile my way up.

“Fire lizard meat increases the growth rate of my Physique attribute, which is why my Physique attribute is far higher than the other two.”

“Other Transcendent ingredients should increase the growth rate of Qi and Spirit. I really need to find a way to find other Transcendent ingredients.”

With that in mind, I signaled the alpha wolf to stay vigilant, then crept towards the sleeping Pangu Grey Bear.

From a distance, I could hear its earth-shattering snores.

This mother bear must be a local tyrant, sleeping soundly in her den, without a care in the world.

I carefully climbed the corn tree, broke off a few corn cobs, and stuffed them into my storage space.

Wow, I didn’t realize it from afar, but up close, the corn was incredibly huge. Each cob was half a meter long and weighed dozens of kilograms!

One corn cob would feed me for half a month.
