Chapter 78: Cunning from the “Demon” (Extra chapter for盟主 “Little Dinosaur Loves Eating Fish”!)

Lu Yuan clenched his fist, finally resolving to fight.

He estimated the distance between them to be about 7 kilometers. Throwing a spear with his physical strength alone was basically impossible.

Even if he stood on a hillside and threw it downwards, it would still be too far.

“Unless I enter the miasma to throw it, I have a chance of successfully attacking… but entering that layer of miasma is too dangerous.”

This gray miasma wasn’t physically dark, but a kind of fear on a mental level, a loss of life force. It was also the “domain” described in the Midea Civilization’s papers – something only high-level transcendent beings could create.

“Or should I handcraft a heavy crossbow?” Lu Yuan’s eyes lit up.

The most important material for a heavy crossbow is a highly elastic bowstring, and he happened to have that – two fire lizard spinal tendons.

Those long tendons required immense strength to draw back. Even with Lu Yuan’s current strength, he could only draw them back about halfway.

But for making a bow and arrow, it was inferior to his spear throw. Therefore, the tendons had remained unused.

“After making the heavy crossbow, I’ll launch the fire lizard’s fuel crystal – burn those damn bones to ashes.”

Lu Yuan, dusting off physics knowledge he hadn’t used in ten years, calculated the crossbow’s trajectory.

“No, no, even with a high-quality heavy crossbow, it still won’t work.”

Even a simple calculation showed that relying solely on trajectory to hit a target several kilometers away was almost impossible with such a projectile weapon; not even a sniper rifle could do it.

Even cannons, relying solely on trajectory, would need to fire several shells to accurately hit once.

The best method was still close-quarters combat.

But close-quarters combat was incredibly dangerous; he wasn’t sure he could win.

Lu Yuan racked his brain, sweating profusely, but couldn’t find a better solution.

Deep down, he still wanted to save the mother bear. Regardless, she was a wild animal he had a sort of “fighting acquaintance” with, the mother of those two chubby cubs…

“Without a savior’s strength, don’t ask for too much…” Lu Yuan admonished himself.

Just then, the old wolf beside him suddenly became agitated, letting out a low growl.

Its fur stood on end, clearly encountering something terrifying, yet forcefully suppressing its emotions.

    “What is it?”

The old wolf led Lu Yuan westward for a while, stopping anxiously.

Lu Yuan stood on the cliff, gazing into the distance.

An even stranger thing happened – he saw a pack of wolves entering the Fire Lizard Valley from a different route!

There were three she-wolves and over a dozen chubby, round little wolves.

    “Th… those are our wolves?!”

Lu Yuan’s face darkened, his voice trembling.

They were on a cliff, unable to stop them, watching helplessly as this pack of wolves walked into the miasma.

His heart pounded. If the mother bear’s capture had angered him, these wolves being taken was a strike at his very lifeline, igniting unbearable rage in his mind!

“Awoooo!” The old wolf also recognized its mate and pups, baring its sharp teeth, its hind legs digging frantically into the earth.

Lu Yuan was almost certain that the damned donkey-headed monster was intelligent.

The situation had become extremely critical!

“What is it doing with these wolves… what use are they? They aren’t even transcendent beings!”

What was even stranger was that he didn’t see any physical entity driving the wolves.

It was as if the wolves were entering on their own.

The old wolf’s mate and pups had been captured, and it paced restlessly at the cliff’s edge. But a fall from over a hundred meters would kill it instantly – it wasn’t that stupid.

Its animal instincts were screaming in terror.

This old Pangu grey wolf, its survival instinct at its peak, trembled with fear – the opponent was too terrifying, an existence it could never defeat.

But its wolfish nature urged it to fight, even to die in battle rather than be a cowardly wolf here!

So it bared its teeth, lifting its head, attempting to unleash a wild wolf’s howl to rouse the pack.

Lu Yuan, still relatively rational, quickly covered the wolf’s mouth, soothingly saying, “I understand. Your mate and pups are its hostages.”

“Its ultimate goal is to hunt me.”

“Your mate and pups aren’t easily killed. They’d be worthless if they were.”

He tossed out some pomegranates; for the sake of food, the old wolf temporarily ceased its agitation.

Even a smart wolf is still an animal; its attention is easily diverted.

What was even more chilling was Lu Yuan himself.

As panic spread, he became even more clear-headed.

“The opponent’s goal is to hunt me!”

Normally, if he found the wolves missing, he would search frantically, exhausted. Finding them kidnapped near the Fire Lizard Valley, he would likely charge in furiously, a desperate fight to the death. Because the pack was his sole companion. He had at least some company now; being alone again, Lu Yuan couldn’t withstand the endless loneliness.

Just then, terrified howls came from afar, “Awoooo!” “Awoooo!”

Over a dozen wolves reached the fire lizard’s corpse, huddling together, their howls echoing. They trembled, paralyzed with fear, unable to even flee, only howling frantically.

Meanwhile, the donkey-headed monster continued uncaring with its bone-piecing task.

Fire lizards were high-level transcendent creatures; their bones were several times harder than bears’ or wolves’, so the bears and wolves had little value.

Seeing this, Lu Yuan searched, becoming even more certain.

“The Midea Civilization’s papers described that subjective creatures aren’t very interested in ordinary animals, because ordinary animals have far too little spiritual energy.”

“So its target is definitely me. It deliberately made them howl to lure me in…”

This guess made Lu Yuan tremble.

    Damn it, this was terrifying…

The beings he had fought before were all unintelligent beasts.

Now, suddenly, there’s one with intelligence, who even takes hostages!

Calling it a ghost wouldn’t be an exaggeration.

“It’s so cunning; it must have hunted many civilizations… It wants to hunt me. Good. Very good.”

At that moment, Lu Yuan was truly tense. Utter panic, like a great river, flooded his body.

He was alone against the unknown, with no one to consult.

Even his Transcendent Fire Seed trembled; it was only a level 2 seed; what could it do against a civilization-level hunter?

Lu Yuan angrily picked up a stone, slamming it hard on his thigh. The intense pain was like a suddenly rising dam, halting the relentless panic.

“Just a milestone-delivering item; what am I afraid of!”

Limitations of fate may always exist, but indomitable challenges are indispensable.

Now, it was time to challenge fate.

Lu Yuan clenched his fists, listened to his heartbeat, laughed, and patted his old companion’s head. “Old friend, I know you’re angry, anxious.”

“But I have to go back, make some battle preparations.”

“Charging in now would play right into its hands.”

“I will save your mate and pups!”

Lu Yuan set off home, the old wolf following close behind.

If one were to speak of giving up, the old wolf’s “scumbag” attribute was a hundred times greater than Lu Yuan’s.

There were plenty of animals in the primeval forest; it could easily find more she-wolves, have more pups, and be a mighty wolf again in a year!

A wolf’s gestation period is only three months.

Its memory is also short; give it some delicious food, and it forgets its worries.

But Lu Yuan wouldn’t give up easily.

He was a human being with feelings; he couldn’t just give up.

He rushed home at top speed, checking the surroundings.

Sure enough, in a dark corner, he smelled a pungent odor of decay.

It was quite strong, seemingly recently appeared.

“Can that monster perform mental control? Otherwise, those wolves couldn’t have run into the valley on their own.”

“Its main body is clearly in the valley, how did it do that? Using a clone, or some other ability? A parasite?” Lu Yuan crouched down, carefully checking, but found no footprints or unusual animal fur.

In a purely combat sense, he was probably no match.

He had to rely on his wits.

But the opponent also had intelligence; it wouldn’t be easily tricked.

“Since it didn’t come after me directly, it means it doesn’t have complete confidence in victory.”

“It saw me once, it only knows I have a Transcendent Fire Seed.”

“But it doesn’t know my other abilities, or my superior-grade weapons…”

“Meanwhile, I don’t know its abilities, only that it might do mental control, and release that gray miasma… In this situation, it wants to lure me into its territory for a home-field advantage. I’m clearly at a disadvantage.”

There was still too little information.

The key to battle was to test the opponent’s Divine Technique, while concealing his own.

Lu Yuan repeatedly inhaled and exhaled, but couldn’t calm down. His mind was full of chaotic thoughts.

He clearly had sufficient cultivation resources, and the data provided by the Midea Civilization. If he followed the plan, he could cultivate a level 3 Transcendent Fire Seed.

Then he would have the confidence to launch an expedition, seeking more treasures!

What awaited him in the Sky City 17,000 kilometers away?

Perhaps there were greater civilizations there, perhaps even living intelligent life!

Who says civilizations must perish? Even the “Gods” haven’t said that all of the Eighth Epoch’s civilizations are extinct, right?

He would surely reach a higher level in the Sky City, perhaps even complete several civilization milestones?
