Chapter 47: Alice, the Heretic’s Follower (Seeking Reads!)
Shen Sui’s vision of a full puppet deck was unrealized, but the addition of three more puppet follower cards, making a total of six, made him feel that giving Alice a Puppet Magician form was indeed necessary.
His deck currently lacked search terms.
At least so far, he hadn’t found a good way around it; he could only blame the absurd Fate Card Duel rules for lacking a race concept.
No race concept? You could at least have a class concept!
Seriously, he wondered how professional players put together a complete deck with search capabilities.
No wonder so few people from the Dueling Academy rose to professional ranks.
Whatever, he didn’t want to think about it anymore. He should quickly write down the effects of these two puppet follower cards and then manipulate Alice to cause trouble to help him draw cards.
Shen Sui looked at the two cards on the interface, their effect and soul point slots blank and in desperate need of his input.
Calling them blank wasn’t entirely accurate.
Once Shen Sui assigned functions to the two puppets, suggested effects appeared in their effect slots. It meant that if the written effects leaned toward the suggestions, the cards could accommodate more powerful effects.
The suggested effect for the Substitute Puppet leaned toward damage negation, and Shen Sui intended to make it a hand trap similar to a Kuriboh (a popular hand trap monster in Yu-Gi-Oh!).
However, the Substitute Puppet could probably accommodate some extra effects.
Shen Sui pondered what his deck lacked.
He had plenty of traps and field clearing cards; what he lacked most was search, especially the ability to search for follower cards.
As long as he could search Alice from his deck, he wouldn’t lack the ability to search for magic cards.
So Shen Sui wrote furiously on the card.
******
Card Name: 【Substitute Puppet·Jami】
Type: Follower Card
Rarity: 5-Star
Effect: ① When you take battle damage or effect damage, you can discard this card from your hand during damage calculation to reduce the damage you take to 0; ② Once per turn, you can banish this card from your graveyard to add one follower card with multiple forms from your deck, graveyard, or banished zone to your hand.
Soul Points: 0
******
Following a similar line of thinking, Shen Sui edited the effect of 【Armed Puppet·Soyah】, resulting in a very powerful puppet follower card.
******
Card Name: 【Armed Puppet·Soyah】
Type: Follower Card
Rarity: 5-Star
Effect: ① Once per turn, during your Main Phase, after the resolution of your magic card effect, return that magic card to your hand; ② Once per turn, when this follower leaves the field, make one follower card with multiple forms on each player’s field undergo an additional form change.
Soul Points: 0
******
The ① effect of 【Armed Puppet·Soyah】 is the Armed Puppet’s inherent function; in the game, the Armed Puppet’s effect is to instantly refresh the player’s skills.
The ② effect was a sudden inspiration for Shen Sui.
As everyone knows, in all card games, there are reasons for any once-per-turn restrictions, and skills or effects that remove this restriction will have some effect, even a very strong effect in some cases.
This is true whether it’s the restriction in Three Kingdoms Kill that a Kill or Wine can only be used once, or the restriction that you can only attack once during the Battle Phase.
In Fate Card Duels, the form change of a Soul Card is also limited to once per turn.
So, what if I could make the Soul Card undergo an additional form change?
In fact, this effect was stronger than Shen Sui had imagined. He had to reduce Soyah’s Soul Points to zero, reduce the ① effect from three times per turn to once, and restrict the effect to only activate when Soyah leaves the field; only then could he barely write this effect down.
He couldn’t even write an effect granting immunity to damage.
He’d just have to use and then banish it. Banishment counts as leaving the field anyway.
As for why this effect could target both players’ Soul Cards, it’s because the form change is, in a sense, also a way to remove the opponent’s powerful followers, right?
Your Soul Card’s effect is too strong? Let me change its form.
Having obtained three follower cards at once, Shen Sui felt a satisfying sense of accomplishment.
With this satisfaction, he turned his attention back to Alice on the main page.
After completing the Sacrificial Doll, Alice finally had the confidence to raid the Andel Thunderbolt Church.
Before, she had been worried that prematurely triggering the heretic god’s arrival ceremony would harm the residents of Andel City. Now, she didn’t need to worry about that anymore. Because whatever harm the ceremony inflicted on the residents would be transferred to Alice by the magic array created by Vivian.
Would it affect Alice?
If he didn’t have some trump cards, Shen Sui wouldn’t dare risk his Soul Card.
If Vivian was immune to damage and influence due to her special abilities, Alice had the Substitute Puppet to transfer damage, the Matchbox to resist banishment, and her own magic to resist various forms of mental pollution. In a sense, apart from being a newbie, Alice was currently in a short period where no one could harm her.
It was a pity that because of the effect of the Sinful Holy Grail, Resurrection no longer worked on Alice; otherwise, she would be even more invincible.
Of course, Alice probably didn’t know that she was currently stacked with buffs, or she would have likely already set the Thunderbolt Church on fire and charged in.
【Alice, fully prepared, arrived alone at the Andel Thunderbolt Church.】
【She settled Anna in a safe place. Before she could free Anna from the Sinful Holy Grail, she wouldn’t let Anna be exposed to scenes involving extraordinary power.】
【Alice looked at the magnificent church, calculating the possibility of setting it on fire.】
I told you so, as expected.
Shen Sui wasn’t surprised.
【Alice was eager to try, but she remembered her agreement with you. She needed to trigger the heretic god’s arrival ceremony to help you absorb the heretic god’s power.】
Okay, next step is to deliver the item, then lay low, wait for the other side to start the ceremony, and then launch a surprise attack to steal the heretic god’s power.
Alice should know how to lay low… right?
【Alice knocked on the door of the Andel Thunderbolt Church.】
【It was dusk; the setting sun was swallowed by the mountains, leaving only an orange-red glow sloping down, falling on Alice.】
【Bathing in the warmth of the setting sun, Alice quickly adjusted her demeanor and expression.】
【Her hands rhythmically knocked on the church door, as if playing some mysterious melody.】
【Creak——】
【The church door opened, revealing a hunched old man who inquired about Alice’s purpose.】
【Alice revealed a wicked smile, showing no reverence for the Lord of Thunder: I think you’ve been waiting for this.】
【She produced the Heretic God’s Eye before the old man.】
【The old man’s face changed, and at the same time, a powerful force surged from the church, locking onto Alice, as if ready to unleash the wrath of thunder and reduce Alice to ashes.】
【Alice held the Heretic God’s Eye to her chest, her eyes frenzied, displaying the crazed expression of a fanatic: I am the most devout follower of my Lord, following my Lord’s instructions, here to guide you on your path.】
【You can call me Hozerville.】
