Chapter 83: The Unlucky One Was Me (Seeking Reads)
“Shen classmate, hello, hello.”
The person sent by the Exploration Bureau today to receive Shen Sui was named Ye Qing. He was very polite upon meeting Shen Sui, clearly having received a heads-up from Wu Ziqin.
Shen Sui glanced at Ye Qing, suddenly remembering that his report had been submitted some time ago. He wondered how the Exploration Bureau’s verification was going. However, regardless of their findings, their conclusion would prove Shen Sui’s intelligence to be accurate.
He hadn’t concealed Alice’s whereabouts. After all, now, the reputation of the witch Hozerville had spread throughout the entire Dawn Continent. With a little effort, the Exploration Bureau could easily trace it back to Hozerville.
And when Shen Sui had confirmed the duel, he had already switched to Alice’s form in front of Wu Ziqin. Even if Wu Ziqin hadn’t noticed at the time, once the Dawn Continent’s intelligence was compiled, he would realize it.
Concealing this matter would only damage their relationship.
At least from the current perspective, the Exploration Bureau was quite generous, so doing so would be counterproductive.
But to say that Shen Sui had been completely truthful would also be inaccurate. He hadn’t concealed Alice’s, or rather Hozerville’s, actions, but he hadn’t mentioned Claude’s involvement at all.
In such matters, leaving some room for oneself is essential.
“Shen classmate.” Ye Qing wasn’t looking for Shen Sui about the ranking tournament—that had dedicated referees—but about the intelligence reward. “Your intelligence has been verified by the Bureau as true. Because the information is very detailed and helpful to us, Director Wu specially applied for the maximum reward of five million for you. However, the reward disbursement process is slow; it might not be in your account until next month.”
“No problem, no problem.” Shen Sui’s mood immediately brightened at the prospect of such a large sum of money.
“Oh, and one more thing.” Ye Qing said somewhat apologetically. “The Exploration Bureau hasn’t fully acquired all the authority from the Fate Card Association regarding the professional certification system, so our arrangements for your certification matches might be a bit rushed. You might need to complete three duels today.”
Ye Qing’s message was actually already relayed by Xin Yuan Tan Chun.
Due to the Fate Card Association’s lack of cooperation, the Exploration Bureau had been using its own employees to fill in for the ranking matches for students going through the certification duels these past few days. The Exploration Bureau wasn’t short of Rank 1 to Rank 3 professional players; after all, most members were those who couldn’t make it in the competitive scene and chose to retire and take civil service examinations.
Although retired, their ranks remained, and the ranking matches didn’t specify that the opponents had to be active Fate Card Masters.
However, if Shen Sui continued to climb, and needed Rank 4 or Rank 5 opponents, the Exploration Bureau would be in a difficult position. It wasn’t that they didn’t have them, but Fate Card Masters of that rank were essentially core members of the Exploration Bureau. Asking them to duel Shen Sui in a ranking match was something even Wu Ziqin would hesitate to request.
So, if Shen Sui truly managed a three-level jump and wanted to advance further, the Exploration Bureau would have to find a way to deal with the subsequent Rank 4 and Rank 5 opponents.
Either invite them or draw them randomly.
The main reason was that the Exploration Bureau was reluctant to use its authority to forcefully resolve things and create a rift. Otherwise, a single cut in subsidies would be enough to make most Fate Card Masters comply.
“No way, is this even allowed?”
Shen Sui’s first opponent was an Exploration Bureau agent who looked young, using a very standard special summon and field-building deck. Only two turns into the match, Shen Sui, through a series of chain actions, completed a closed-loop chain of [Magic Apprentice Alice] + [Andrew’s Wand] + [Resurrection].
This opponent, like Yu Wenyuan, lost all means of resistance because his key counter-cards were negated.
“Amazing.” The agent wiped his forehead. The Alice in front of him had already been resurrected four times, and his violent expansion deck couldn’t summon a single minion successfully.
“I concede.” He didn’t want to humiliate himself further and conceded cleanly.
Shen Sui won his second match of the day. He had defeated two former professional players in just two hours.
He remained calm. Rank 1 and Rank 2 Fate Card Masters might be strong in the eyes of others, but for Shen Sui’s already mature deck, they were easily manageable.
“Sui Shen truly lives up to the name.” Ye Qing twitched the corner of his mouth, having watched Shen Sui’s duel. “What an amazing duel.”
Hearing about it is nothing compared to seeing it for yourself.
Shen Sui’s deck is truly… disgusting.
No wonder some people tried to manipulate things to get his cards banned.
If the [Stellar Super Magic Array] hadn’t been banned, Shen Sui could have pulled off even more extravagant plays.
Speaking of which, I heard from above that the Exploration Bureau was planning to make a big deal out of Shen Sui’s banned cards, intending to make trouble for the Fate Card Association.
After all, for the country, a duel industry isn’t that important. However, losing face in front of the whole world because of a ban list is unacceptable.
Some people have been acting tyrannically in the country for too long, seemingly forgetting that a country’s banned cards consistently taking up half the spots on the global ban list is highly abnormal.
In the past, the Fate Card Association suppressed public opinion with its financial clout.
But suppressing public opinion doesn’t mean suppressing discontent.
Angry people are waiting for an opportunity to explode.
And what better event to ignite their discontent than a new card being added to the ban list?
However, after watching this duel, Ye Qing suddenly felt that this card should indeed be banned. A substitute card alone could produce such a disgusting chain; the fully powered version must be even more nightmarish.
Ye Qing would never want to face an opponent like Shen Sui. Duels are meant to be fun, not a prison sentence.
“Congratulations on winning your second ranking match.” The referee took out the record sheet, glanced at Shen Sui, and, though already knowing the answer, still followed procedure, asking, “So, will you choose a Rank 2 Fate Card Master as your opponent, or challenge a Rank 3 Fate Card Master?”
“Challenge Rank 3.” Shen Sui didn’t hesitate.
Ye Qing nodded, made a note on the record, and said to Shen Sui, “Okay, we’ve already prepared your opponent.”
The referee then produced an envelope, clearly prepared in advance.
Several students were currently undergoing promotion tournaments in the Duel Training Arena today. Many of Ye Qing’s colleagues were here preparing, ready to duel immediately if their names were drawn.
I wonder which unlucky sod will run into Sui Shen’s sights.
Ye Qing thought gleefully.
“Your opponent is…” Shen Sui’s referee glanced at the text, a mixture of pity, mockery, and amusement on his face as he looked at Ye Qing.
“Rank 3 Fate Card Master, Ye Qing.”
The gleeful Ye Qing instantly froze.
Oh no!
I forgot I’m also a Rank 3 Fate Card Master.
“Great!” Shen Sui was excited. “Let’s duel!”
Duel chapter tomorrow.
Also, starting tomorrow, I’ll post both updates at 8 am.
