Chapter 10: Mukugetsu: Yes, you guys made a killing!

Watching Mukugetsu’s incredibly swift and clean whirlwind leg technique, Might Guy’s eyes instantly lit up. He felt like he had encountered his dream technique, perfectly fulfilling all his fantasies about taijutsu (martial arts).

    Simple, swift, powerful, and handsome.

“I love it! Please teach me this later!” Might Guy emphatically expressed his satisfaction with the Konoha Whirlwind.

“Glad you like it,” Mukugetsu smiled and nodded.

Might Guy’s reaction was within his expectations. After all, this taijutsu was the one Might Guy himself would develop later, even creating a whole series – the Great Whirlwind, the Strong Whirlwind, various Konoha Whirlwinds. He wouldn’t dislike it.

With Mukugetsu’s assurance, Obito and Might Guy were both very happy, even finding the usually troublesome exam papers more pleasing to the eye.

“Watch me go all out! I’ll definitely get four or more correct this time!” Obito excitedly rubbed his hands together, looking like he was about to go into battle.

“I have to get at least three correct, or I’ll run five hundred laps around Konoha tonight!” To learn his dream technique, Might Guy also hardened his resolve, imposing a self-imposed punishment.

He planned to test his improved strength against Kakashi after learning this technique.

But the sudden surge of enthusiasm quickly faded. After doing a few problems, Obito understood a truth.

If pushed to the limit, he might be able to unleash a bigger Great Fireball Technique, or hit the target with five shuriken in one go, but when it came to the exam questions, he was helpless, no matter how much he panicked.

He propped his head up with one hand, the other constantly playing with his pen in various positions. His anxiety made him even dislike the swaying green leaves, feeling like they were mocking his inability to solve the problems.

Obito couldn’t help but look at Might Guy beside him.

Although he had been classmates with Might Guy for over three years, and they had Kakashi as a mutual friend, they had never really hung out, their relationship was quite ordinary.

They weren’t strangers, but they couldn’t be called friends either; they were more like friends of a friend, who happened to be in the same class.

When he thought of Might Guy, his first reaction was “dead last.”

Although he himself was also called a dead last, Obito considered himself merely lacking in certain subjects. His shurikenjutsu and ninja techniques were pretty good, it was just his theory that was particularly poor.

It was just that the other Uchihas were too strong, excelling in every subject, making him, the imperfect Uchiha, seem like a dead last.

Might Guy was different. Might Guy’s theory and ninja techniques were both weak, he was last in most subjects – a publicly recognized dead last.

But right now, Might Guy was showing better perseverance than Obito. Even though he was struggling with the difficult problems, Might Guy was still diligently working on them.

Obito recalled a time when Might Guy was ridiculed and he proclaimed his ambition:

“I believe that if I keep working hard, I will eventually become the strongest taijutsu ninja!”

Although Obito wasn’t among those who mocked him, when he heard those words, he didn’t believe that Might Guy could become the so-called strongest taijutsu ninja.

But now, his thoughts had changed. Whether he could become the strongest taijutsu ninja was uncertain, but he should be much stronger than those who mocked Might Guy.

“Maybe it would be pretty good to become friends with him,” Obito muttered, thinking they could team up against the annoying Kakashi.

Watching Might Guy persistently working on the problems, Obito also started writing furiously, racking his brains.

Mukugetsu, watching this scene, wore a thoughtful expression.

He hadn’t expected these two to have such a chemical reaction together. Obito, who was originally impatient and restless, was now able to calm down and work on the problems.

He could use similar methods to stimulate Obito’s cultivation in the future.

After the two finished, Mukugetsu graded their papers.

Obito got three correct, and Might Guy got two.

“Sigh, still didn’t reach four, I did my best,” Obito slumped on the table, looking completely exhausted.

“Five hundred more laps tonight,” Might Guy added the penalty for failure to his training plan.

Mukugetsu comforted them, saying, “You guys are only five questions away from passing, and you improved by one question in just one hour. Think about it that way, doesn’t it feel much better?”

Obito and Might Guy thought about it – that was true. Passing the exam and mastering ninja techniques were within their reach.

After comforting them, Mukugetsu cheerfully brought out two more exam papers.

Obito looked at the brand-new test papers on the table, then thought about the three weekends left before the exam, and his vision went dark.

But he could only pick up his pen and continue stubbornly, because giving up now would mean all the previous work was in vain.

Meanwhile, after recovering his chakra, Shisui started another round of Fire Release practice. Fire dragons constantly danced in the sky, attracting Obito’s attention.

“Teacher Hanyu, after we learn your ninja techniques, are we considered your disciples, like Shisui?” Obito asked after some thought.

“If you want to be, then you are,” Mukugetsu replied ambiguously.

“Heh, since we’re going to be disciples eventually, why don’t you teach us now, Teacher?” Obito revealed his true intentions.

Mukugetsu looked at him skeptically. Although this was a result of his deliberate arrangement, this “Yan Kingdom map” (a reference to a short-sighted or quick plan; in this case, Obito’s plan) was too short.

Obito patted his chest and assured him, “Teacher Mukugetsu, I absolutely don’t mean to avoid studying; it’s just that I think we can do both simultaneously.”

Obito then tugged on Might Guy’s sleeve.

    “Guy, don’t you think so?”

“Teacher, I think Obito is right,” Might Guy also wanted to learn the Konoha Whirlwind as soon as possible to spar with Kakashi.

“What if you two don’t pass then?” Mukugetsu didn’t rush to agree but asked instead.

“Whatever Teacher says then, we’ll listen to you,” Obito was still confident about passing.

“Me too,” Might Guy nodded in agreement.

“Is that so…” Mukugetsu put on a look of contemplation, seeming to hesitate.

“Teacher Mukugetsu, just trust me! I’ll definitely study hard with you and won’t let you down,” Obito said quickly, sensing a chance.

“Me too,” Might Guy also made a fist to show his determination.

“Alright then, I believe you’ll keep your word. Once you finish this paper, I’ll teach you the Fierce Dragon Fire Technique and the Konoha Whirlwind,” Mukugetsu said, as if he had been persuaded.

“Great! I knew Teacher Mukugetsu was the best! I won’t disappoint your trust,” Obito said excitedly.

He felt like today was his lucky day; he had improved his theoretical scores and gained a powerful teacher – he’d made a killing.

“Teacher Mukugetsu, I will definitely work hard to cultivate your taijutsu!” Might Guy said seriously.

He also thought he was lucky today, having met someone willing to teach him taijutsu.

[Establish a master-disciple relationship with Uchiha Obito?]

[Establish a master-disciple relationship with Might Guy?]

Looking at the two pop-up windows, Mukugetsu smiled contentedly. Yes, you guys made a killing!
