Chapter 30: Attempting Cultivation Tasks (Seeking Continued Reading)

Muyue first had Obito try climbing a tree.

The eastern Konoha forest had plenty of trees, with many over ten meters tall, and even taller ones were plentiful.

Muyue casually pointed to a twenty-meter-tall tree and told Obito to try channeling his Chakra into his feet to climb it.

Obito nodded, then took a deep breath, concentrated his Chakra in his feet, and shot upwards.

Obito climbed to about ten meters before losing control of his Chakra, accidentally stamping a footprint into the tree and falling.

Muyue leaped up and caught Obito, secretly nodding to herself. While he didn’t reach the level of Asma, it was passable; at least he didn’t fall after a few steps.

This training was straightforward—persistent practice without special techniques.

After demonstrating a few times, Muyue left a Shadow Clone to watch Obito practice while she went to find Might Guy, who was training his physique.

Among Muyue’s three disciples, Might Guy’s training regimen was the most monotonous.

Obito could switch to Ninja techniques to change things up when he got tired of taijutsu, but Might Guy’s training consisted only of practicing the Leaf Whirlwind and physical conditioning.

Physical conditioning wasn’t something that could be achieved overnight, and it was an area where Muyue’s teaching skills were ineffective.

Her skills allowed Might Guy to learn taijutsu faster and improve more quickly, but they couldn’t accelerate his physical training results. The training effect of one push-up remained just one push-up.

When Muyue approached Might Guy, he was doing push-ups with a rock roughly his own size on his back.

“Guy, how’s your Leaf Whirlwind coming along?” Muyue asked.

She wanted to test the trigger conditions for the cultivation task, and Might Guy, like Obito, at trust level three, was the best choice.

Hearing Muyue, Might Guy stopped, holding his position and replying, “A little faster than during the exam, but not fast enough.”

After answering, Might Guy removed the rock, stood up, and kicked out a lightning-fast Leaf Whirlwind at a nearby wooden post.

Muyue nodded. Compared to before, there was definite improvement; his leg movements were sharper and more decisive. He must have gained something from his fight with Hinata Hiashi.

Physical conditioning couldn’t show results that quickly; improvements in physique progressed at a minimum monthly rate.

“What do you think makes you stronger?” Muyue asked a question that confused Might Guy.

“Of course, cultivation,” Might Guy answered immediately, voicing his thoughts.

He found Muyue’s question strange. To become stronger, persistent cultivation was the answer.

Muyue shook her head and asked again, “Cultivation leads to improvement and is the most important part of increasing strength, but are there any other methods?”

Might Guy scratched his head, then thought about his improved Leaf Whirlwind and the practical exams given at the Ninja Academy, and suddenly had an epiphany: “Combat!”

“That’s right. Combat is also a crucial aspect of improving strength. In combat, you can better translate your training results into your own abilities,” Muyue smiled.

“The combat I’m talking about isn’t like your fights with Obito; that’s not true combat.”

“To improve, you must challenge stronger opponents and engage in honorable combat against those you want to challenge.”

As Muyue spoke, a person gradually appeared in Might Guy’s mind. That person had white hair, always wore a mask, and was Konoha’s renowned super-genius. There was only one name: Might Guy’s self-proclaimed lifelong rival, Kakashi Hatake!

After studying under Muyue, Might Guy had long desired to challenge Kakashi, but he’d been suppressing it. He’d wanted to wait until he fully mastered the Leaf Whirlwind before challenging Kakashi.

But now Might Guy changed his mind. Would mastering the Leaf Whirlwind guarantee victory over Kakashi? Not necessarily. Would he fear failure? No.

So why not fight Kakashi and further improve his strength?

“Teacher Muyue, I understand,” Might Guy said solemnly.

Seeing the look on Might Guy’s face, Muyue knew her guidance had worked. Given Might Guy’s proactive nature, he might go find Kakashi tonight.

However, to Muyue’s regret, a cultivation task titled “Defeat Kakashi” didn’t appear.

“What other conditions are there?” Muyue wondered.

Based on the original Naruto story, at this point, Might Guy certainly had a strong “desire” to defeat Kakashi. The title of super-genius, the rivalry—Might Guy had many reasons to want to defeat Kakashi.

Carefully recalling the details of Obito’s task trigger, Muyue noticed a problem. Obito’s attitude was supplicatory, and his words implied a necessary dependence on Muyue’s help; it had to be Muyue who taught him a powerful Fire Release technique for him to complete the task.

“Does achieving the result require a necessary dependence on the teacher?” Muyue speculated.

If that were the case, then Might Guy’s failure to trigger a cultivation task made sense. Might Guy had at most been inspired to challenge Kakashi; he hadn’t thought about needing Muyue’s help.

Having made a guess, Muyue didn’t probe further. He would wait until Might Guy failed to challenge Kakashi before acting. Then, he would show his failing disciple the warmth of a teacher.

After teaching, Muyue went to his house in the main city area.

After dinner, Muyue went to the park where he’d previously met Minato and Kushina.

Luckily, he ran into Kushina and Minato again. Perhaps the locals favored this park; neither seemed surprised to see him.

“By the way, you left so quickly last time that I forgot to ask something,” Kushina suddenly remembered and asked, “Did you accept Third Hokage’s request to teach his son?”

    Muyue nodded.

“I heard that child is a bit rebellious and disobeys the Third Hokage. Will he listen to you?” Kushina curiously asked.

Muyue smiled and told them about how he trained Asma.

Kushina didn’t know what it was like to be taught by Muyue, but she found it amusing. Especially the part about Asma trying to slack off and resist, only to be tricked into exhausting himself with training; she exclaimed that the shrewd Third Hokage could actually have such a naive son.

Minato was also surprised by Muyue’s teaching methods, impressed that he could get even unwilling students to cooperate in training.

Muyue didn’t just talk; he also asked Minato and Kushina some questions, and the atmosphere was quite congenial. Muyue felt that by spending time together and becoming friends, he could subtly express his interest in sealing jutsu and cursed seals.

Transition chapters are so hard to write. I deleted and revised this chapter, removing a thousand words, which is why it’s so late.
