Chapter 86: Strength Test (Subscription Request)

“Right, Teacher Mukugetsu, do we have to pay an entrance fee for the second stage too?” Obito suddenly remembered something important.

“For your first time clearing the first stage, you can challenge the second stage for free. Normally, the fee is the same as the first stage,” Mukugetsu explained.

“It’s free the first time? That’s great!” Obito was very happy; it was like he’d gotten out of doing three more exam papers.

“Teacher Mukugetsu, let’s start then.” Obito couldn’t wait.

Then Mukugetsu led Obito to the riverbank and explained:

“This river is only fifteen meters wide. You need to cross it within ten seconds without falling in.”

After speaking to Obito, Mukugetsu created over ten Shadow Clones who stood by the river, ready to use Ninja Techniques.

At first, when Obito heard that he had ten seconds, he was excited. It was only fifteen meters, and he had ten seconds!

But after seeing Mukugetsu create so many Shadow Clones, Obito became uneasy. A terrible guess formed in his mind.

More than ten Mukugetsus simultaneously performed hand seals, and soon, more than a dozen thick water dragons appeared on the surface of the water, rapidly charging back and forth along the river.

Obito stared dumbfounded at the water dragons that almost filled the river. This was supposed to be a certain level of interference?

With so many water dragons charging back and forth, he felt there wasn’t much space left to even step.

“Obito, are you ready? I’m going to start timing,” Mukugetsu asked.

(If he were not by the riverbank, performing Water Release would be much harder. With his current Chakra reserves, such an operation would be difficult.)

“I’m ready, begin,” Obito said, gritting his teeth.

He’d already agreed to the challenge with Mukugetsu; he had to do it whether he could or not.

Obito frantically thought about how to complete this second stage challenge.

Although he’d trained in water walking while dodging water dragon projectiles, the number of projectiles in that training was nowhere near the same level as this challenge.

During water walking training, there was only one water dragon projectile on the river; he just had to be careful not to be overturned by the waves created by the projectile.

In this challenge, the entire river surface was filled with water dragon projectiles; finding a place to even set foot was a test of his eyesight.

“Start!” Mukugetsu shouted as he continued using his Ninja Technique.

And when Obito heard Mukugetsu’s start, he had no choice but to plunge into the river full of water dragon projectiles.

Obito still had a sliver of hope, thinking that maybe he could just close his eyes and sprint across, it was only fifteen meters after all.

However, the challenge Mukugetsu had in mind couldn’t be cleared by luck alone.

Obito hadn’t even gone three meters when he was hit by a rapidly approaching water dragon projectile, falling into the river and swallowing a mouthful of water.

“Unfortunately, you failed the challenge,” Mukugetsu stopped his Ninja Technique and quickly pulled Obito out, saying.

“Teacher Mukugetsu, this challenge is too difficult! How am I supposed to get across with so many water dragons?” Obito complained.

He felt like he’d failed before he even started.

“You had plenty of time, a full ten seconds. Why didn’t you stop to observe the movement patterns of the water dragons before you started?” Mukugetsu reminded him.

(Obito didn’t believe in thinking before acting, he might think after acting three times.)

He figured that even Obito, after three failures, would think things through.

“Teacher Mukugetsu, can I try again?” Hearing Mukugetsu’s words, Obito realized he had been reckless. He had been too shocked by the water dragons to notice the details.

“To retry, it’ll cost you one hundred questions worth of entrance fee. Are you sure you want to challenge it now?” Mukugetsu smiled at Obito.

Obito thought about the three exam papers he’d just received yesterday and ultimately gave up.

Even with Mukugetsu’s advice, the difficulty of this stage was apparent, making it extremely hard to clear. Failing meant wasting one hundred questions, and Obito didn’t want to do that.

“Then let’s start your Cultivation. Today, I’ll teach you a special Chakra application technique to improve your speed. If you can master it, you should be able to sprint across the river,” Mukugetsu said.

“Teacher Mukugetsu, you’re my Six Paths Sage!” Obito was thrilled, seeing a glimmer of hope again.

“Then cultivate diligently,” Mukugetsu tapped Obito’s head with her index finger.

“I’ve been cultivating diligently!” Obito chuckled.

Then Mukugetsu began explaining some techniques from the “Shunshin no Jutsu” (Body Flicker Technique) to Obito.

At 3:30 PM on Monday afternoon, Mukugetsu began the first strength test.

This time, he didn’t ask for help from the ninja school teachers. Instead, he created two Shadow Clones, one to score each group.

(Error-free version is available on 6X9XBookXBar!)

“Kotetsu Hagane.” The Shadow Clone Mukugetsu took out a form and began calling students for their exams.

Hearing his name, Kotetsu Hagane quickly stepped forward.

Kotetsu Hagane quickly performed hand seals, using Transformation Technique, Clone Technique, and Substitution Technique. Then he performed a set of taijutsu (body techniques) movements, and finally threw shuriken (throwing knives) at a target thirty meters away.

“Slight improvement, keep working hard.” Mukugetsu commented after scoring.

“Yes, thank you, Teacher Mukugetsu.” Hearing Mukugetsu’s praise, Kotetsu Hagane nodded satisfied.

    “Kiyomi Ketsutsuki,” Mukugetsu continued.

Kiyomi Ketsutsuki also quickly stepped forward and began to display his abilities.

After scoring, Mukugetsu found that Kiyomi Ketsutsuki and Kotetsu Hagane had performed similarly in the group test, showing roughly the same progress over the week.

(Maybe that’s the bond between the Ketsutsuki brothers, even their cultivation progress is the same.)

    “Temari Mitarashi,” Mukugetsu continued.

Hearing Mukugetsu’s voice, Temari ran forward, first exchanging a bright smile with Mukugetsu before beginning to demonstrate her abilities.

When they heard Mukugetsu call Temari’s name, Kiyomi Ketsutsuki and Kotetsu Hagane felt a little nervous, only relaxing after watching Temari’s performance.

Although she was stronger than them, the difference wasn’t significant. She probably wouldn’t be directly promoted to Group B; at most, her score would be a little higher.

“Ketsutsuki, next week’s practical test, we’re definitely going to make a name for ourselves!” Kotetsu Hagane thought of their almost perfected deception technique, a wide smile appearing on his face.

“Yeah, with Ebisu-nii’s (older brother) brilliant ideas, we’re sure to sweep through Group C,” Kiyomi Ketsutsuki nodded.

“It’s a pity that Ebisu-nii is so humble that he refuses to let us reveal that the brilliant idea came from him.” Kotetsu Hagane sighed.

“Ebisu-nii may not want the fame, but we can’t let him off. If we achieve a great victory, we’ll share the glory with Ebisu-nii!” Kiyomi Ketsutsuki expressed the importance of showing gratitude.

“Ketsutsuki, you’re the best. Otherwise, I’d have made a mistake,” Kotetsu Hagane patted Kiyomi Ketsutsuki on the shoulder, and they both smiled.
