Seeing Gu Xi and Dimitri easily reach an agreement, the stout Military Quartermaster felt a little awkward.

He coughed loudly, drawing Gu Xi’s attention. After clearing his throat, he was about to say, “My friend, Dimitri is…”

Before he could finish, Dimitri reached out, dragged the Skeleton Archer leader she had pinned against the wall, and held him up like a chick.

Gu Xi immediately understood Dimitri’s meaning. “Add the Skeleton Archer leader you just recommended. I don’t need any other leaders; I don’t have that many undead yet. Too many leaders would be wasteful. By the way, what else can I exchange this military merit for besides leaders?”

[Skeleton Archer Leader (Level 0, Summon): Experience (0/500) Attack 3, Defense 1, Health 13, Ammunition 5, Skills: Elite Combatant, Squad Commander (29 people).]

    “Friend, about that…”

“No way, isn’t the price one military merit per leader here? You wouldn’t be trying to raise the price, would you?”

“No, why would I raise the price?” The Quartermaster quickly shook his head. For the first time, he felt that Gu Xi, whom he had initially underestimated, wasn’t easy to deal with.

“I just wanted to say there are some better leaders here. Wouldn’t you like to take another look?”

“No need, two leaders are enough. Besides leaders, what else can military merit be exchanged for? Heroes?”

“You can’t exchange for heroes,” the Quartermaster said with a smile. “You can exchange for some equipment, but not combat equipment. These are all campaign equipment usable by players, leaders, and heroes. The quality is similar, all blue-grade, but as you know, this type of campaign equipment is relatively scarce, so the price is higher—one military merit per piece.

There are also skill books. While not all Undead Mage skill books are available here, we should have some. They cost one military merit per book.

You have your own city now, right? I have city building blueprints here. Small plots cost one military merit each, medium plots two, and I don’t have any large plots at the moment. If you want something specific, I can help you find it for three military merits.”

Having given up on some ideas, the Quartermaster no longer worried about Dimitri and began introducing the items he could sell. This time, to prevent Gu Xi from getting any more bargains, he specifically quoted the prices.

Gu Xi initially hesitated over the equipment and building blueprints, but after a moment’s thought, he decisively said, “What skills do you have here?”

    “Smart.”

As soon as the Quartermaster heard Gu Xi’s choice, he immediately praised him. “Everything else is external; only skills are truly yours. I have profession skills, active skills, and passive skills. There are no special skills—as you know, those require prerequisites.

Also, some profession skills have profession requirements. If you haven’t met the requirements, you can’t choose those skills. This is clearly indicated, so make sure you read carefully before selecting.”

    “Okay.”

Gu Xi decisively stated, “Show me all the skill books first. By the way, how many basic skill books do you have?”

“You can tell by looking at my Death Knight leading the way.”

Gu Xi immediately understood the Quartermaster’s meaning.

Clearly, there were some basic or essential prerequisite skill books in high demand.

However, Gu Xi had his own plans. Even before graduating from the academy, he had already considered his future path and skill allocation.

Although he mastered two of the three god-tier skills, it didn’t mean Gu Xi would drastically change his path.

Gu Xi’s plan was to progress from Undead Mage, to Lich at level 10, to Lich King at level 20, and finally strive for the path to becoming a Death God.

In Gu Xi’s plan, he needed to master at least one of the three ultimate skills in the Undead Mage path. Only then would he have a chance to become a Lich King at level 20; otherwise, he could only become a Greater Lich.

At level 30, he wouldn’t have any second-tier advancement options and would remain a Greater Lich until death.

    The difference was huge.

Although there were only a few level 20 players in Bailan City, Gu Xi could think so far ahead. Perhaps this was the fantasy of a player.

Gu Xi, with his dreams, had planned his essential skills from the start.

Unfortunately, his luck hadn’t been very good. Since his class selection, four consecutive choices had failed to yield his desired skills.

Now, hearing about the skill books, Gu Xi would naturally pay more attention, at least guaranteeing he could obtain one of his targets.

“The skill books are all here. You can look at them, but only the covers. Once a skill book is opened, it’s considered automatically read, and I won’t accept returns.”

The Quartermaster had seen through Gu Xi’s intentions.

“I understand. Let me see… Witchcraft, no. Lucky Charm? Also no. War Machine Engineering, ah, this one’s here, let’s take it. Logistics, darn it, no again. Offensive Tactics, no. What’s this? Military Armaments? Economics? Useless.”

Gu Xi flipped through the skill books one by one, prioritizing the non-profession skills.

According to his plan, he needed to learn two of the following five non-profession skills: Witchcraft (Passive), Lucky Charm (Passive), War Machine Engineering (Passive), Logistics (Passive), and Offensive Tactics (Passive).

After searching for a while, he only found War Machine Engineering. The others were nowhere to be found.

[War Machine Engineering (Passive): Strengthens the power of war machines, increases the attack power, defense, and damage of ballistae; increases the damage of catapults; increases the healing effect of field hospitals; provides additional attack power for ranged units when ammunition carts are present.]

War Machine Engineering was a must for Gu Xi.

Aside from other things, the combination of War Machine Engineering and the Undead path would open many options, such as the Plague Tent after obtaining the Field Hospital. Then there were Corpse Launchers after choosing the Catapult path, and even skills to increase the attack power of arrow towers.

This was quite important to Gu Xi.

His Death City, at level 5, could deploy summoning towers on the battlefield, and at level 9, it could deploy walls and moats—walls that came with built-in arrow towers.

However, Gu Xi hadn’t researched this in detail, unaware of the changes that War Machine Engineering combined with the Undead profession would bring to the arrow towers.

But Gu Xi was certain that War Machine Engineering would be useful to him—and that was enough.
