Chapter 21: Skeleton Soldiers (Seeking More Reads)

As the first Skeleton Soldier successfully advanced, more and more skeletons, having gained enough experience and absorbed sufficient amounts of strange energy, successfully advanced into Skeleton Soldiers.

Gu Xi, believing that enhancing strengths was superior to balanced development, directed the advancement of all Skeleton Soldiers towards highlighting their individual characteristics.

Thus, each of the four combat squads had their own specialized Skeleton Soldiers.

Combat Squad 1’s Skeleton Soldiers retained their battleaxe and recurved blade, but gained a leather armor and three throwing daggers at their waist.

These Skeleton Soldiers had learned ranged attack methods. Although only effective up to ten meters, it was still considered ranged combat.

[Skeleton Soldier (Level 3, Summon): Experience (13/500) Attack 3+1 (Melee Weapon), Defense 1+1 (Armor), Ammunition 3 (Daggers), Health 19, Skills Undead, Backstab, Throw.]

Combat Squad 3’s skeletons were entirely different; their enhancements focused entirely on their spears. Their skeleton leader had previously obtained a spear, and after absorbing enough strange energy, the spears had become significantly stronger.

[Skeleton Soldier (Level 3, Summon): Experience (19/500) Attack 3+2 (Bone Spear), Defense 1, Health 19, Skills Undead, Disarm, Thrust.]

Combat Squad 4’s Skeleton Soldiers were the opposite of Combat Squad 3’s, enhancing the defensive capabilities of their shields and adding thick armor. If not for the longswords they wielded, they might have been mistaken for heavily armored Skeleton Soldiers.

[Skeleton Soldier (Level 3, Summon): Experience (6/500) Attack 3, Defense 1+3 (Shield + Armor), Health 24, Skills Undead, Shield Wall, Temporary Health.]

After the various Skeleton Soldier advancements, Gu Xi checked the status of the four combat squads.

Combat Squads 1 and 2 suffered severe losses, while Squads 3 and 4 fared better, sustaining almost no losses and gaining additional slots due to their Skeleton Leaders leveling up.

    [Combat Squad 1 (Level 1, Unnamed, Traits: Health +3, Attack +1, Experience 18/200): Leader (1/1) Level 1 Skeleton Leader, Members (22/33) Level 3 Skeleton Soldiers (3), Level 2 Skeletons (13), Level 1 Skeletons (6)]

    [Combat Squad 2 (Level 1, Unnamed, Traits: Attack +5, Defense +1, Experience 26/200): Leader (1/1) Level 1 Skeleton Leader, Members (21/39) Level 3 Skeleton Warriors (1), Level 3 Skeleton Soldiers (9), Level 2 Skeletons (6), Level 1 Skeletons (5)]

    [Combat Squad 3 (Level 1, Unnamed, Traits: Attack +3, Health +4, Experience 198/200): Leader (1/1) Level 1 Skeleton Leader, Members (28/33) Level 3 Skeleton Soldiers (8), Level 2 Skeletons (14), Level 1 Skeletons (6)]

    [Combat Squad 4 (Level 1, Unnamed, Traits: Defense +6, Experience 74/200): Leader (1/1) Level 1 Skeleton Leader, Members (40/45) Level 3 Skeleton Warriors (6), Level 3 Skeleton Soldiers (9), Level 2 Skeletons (21), Level 1 Skeletons (4)]

    Uneven troop strength.

Looking at the information, Gu Xi sighed.

He couldn’t predict what the third wave of enemies would be like.

Gu Xi then directed his skeletons to rearrange their defenses. The corpses of the fallen skeletons were placed back onto the streets, and tables and chairs from nearby rooms were used as barricades.

Combat Squad 3 positioned themselves behind Combat Squad 4, while Squads 1 and 2 took up ambush positions in the buildings.

As long as the enemy appeared, Gu Xi could repeat his previous tactic, prioritizing the elimination of enemy leaders and using his skeletons to wear down the black ghostly figures.

However, Gu Xi never expected what awaited him fifteen minutes later.

Instead of the usual three to four hundred black ghostly figures, a single enormous ghostly entity emerged.

This ghost, like the previous ones, was entirely black, but its size was immense. Instead of standing upright, it moved on its back, its joints bending backward as it crawled on the ground. Eight massive arms sprouted from its underside, moving like a spider.

Three human heads were cradled in its arms. These heads, though also entirely black, were clearly distinguishable as a man, a woman, and a child, based on size and features.

The creature was as large as a massive dump truck, its numerous writhing arms making it a terrifying sight.

Entering the street, the massive ghost charged forward like a train. The barricades set up by the combat squads were no match and were instantly smashed.

Gu Xi reacted instantly. Upon seeing this, he pointed at the skeleton corpses in front of the ghost and chanted an incantation.

    “Minor Corpse Explosion!”

But the ghost’s movement speed was too fast; despite Gu Xi targeting the area in front of the ghost, the corpses exploded after the ghost had already passed.

    “Combat Squad 4, advance!”

Gu Xi yelled, while simultaneously casting a bone shield on himself and charging forward with a wooden club.

Gu Xi’s club was the weapon of a high-level ghost leader. Upon grasping it, the club quickly shrank to a size suitable for Gu Xi.

    [Bone-Smasher (Green, Club)]

    [Attack: 2-3]

    [Equipment Requirement: Strength 2]

[Special: Shatter; When attacking an enemy, there’s a 50% chance to shatter the enemy’s bones, armor, or other defenses.]

[Description: Do not underestimate the power of a club; many have met their end by this club.]

With the club in hand, Gu Xi felt emboldened to join the fight.

Although the ghost hadn’t yet attacked, its speed indicated high agility. High-agility enemies usually had low health and attack power. They prioritized evasion and would unleash multiple attacks in short bursts.

Thus, as long as they could be contained, there was a chance of victory. This was why Gu Xi immediately ordered Combat Squad 4 forward; their shield wall could withstand the ghost’s charge. Once the ghost’s movement slowed, Gu Xi could use the Bone-Smasher to break one of its legs.

After that, it would be a straightforward boss fight. Although considerable losses had already been incurred, Gu Xi still commanded 111 skeletons. There was no reason they couldn’t defeat a single ghost together.
