Chapter 35: The Streets (Seeking More Reads)
“Deal!”
The attendant said happily, “Sir, how about we go take a look at the Darminwei District now?”
Looking at the attendant’s expression, Gu Xi felt he might have been a bit careless.
“Let me warn you, I’m not that easy to fool. While I agree to go to the Darminwei District, we must stay right next to Camden District’s territory.”
To Gu Xi’s serious and righteous attitude, the attendant said with a smile, “Sir, please rest assured. Our Destiny Compass Guild has never let a client down.”
Having said that, the attendant gestured him to go outside.
Shaya outside was eager to follow along.
Gu Xi said somewhat awkwardly, “Could you two go outside for a bit? At least let me put on some clothes.”
But Shaya didn’t retreat; instead, she poked her head in, her expression seeming to say, *I’ve seen it all.*
Gu Xi put on the clothes he had just washed, not bothering that they were still damp. He didn’t care; at least they weren’t as smelly now and were wearable.
Seeing this, the attendant frowned.
As a thief, he disliked this kind of easily-exposed attire the most.
But Gu Xi wasn’t his subordinate, so he couldn’t say anything.
He could only watch Gu Xi put on his clothes, then soak a piece of bread in the leftover soup, holding it in his hand and eating as he walked outside.
“Mentor, look at him, all hurried and flustered. What profession do you think he is?”
“As thin as he is, he’s most likely an Undead Mage,” the attendant whispered. “Shaya, stay in the shop; don’t come out.”
“It’s not a big deal,” Shaya rolled her eyes. “It’s not even dark yet, and there’s no one in the shop. My following won’t affect anything.”
The attendant glared at her. Shaya shrunk her head, hiding herself behind the door.
“You think that’ll stop me? Think again.”
The attendant didn’t bother with Shaya’s attitude. On the one hand, it was a test for her; on the other, it was a show for Gu Xi.
His meaning was clear: he didn’t intend to bring such a troublesome person along, aiming to show Gu Xi his professionalism.
However, Gu Xi didn’t understand the attendant’s intentions at all. His mind was focused on the attendant’s familiarity with the nearby streets.
This attendant truly lived up to his reputation as a member of a thief’s guild; he knew this area like the back of his hand.
Sometimes, there was clearly no path ahead, yet he would open a small door, leading to another alleyway.
Following the attendant, Gu Xi almost got lost.
Even in daylight with someone leading the way, Gu Xi believed that anyone venturing into these alleys at night would take at least three to five hours to find their way out.
This area connected to many streets. After a few turns, the attendant led Gu Xi out of the alleys.
“Ahead is Greenwich Street. After crossing this street, we’ll reach Northumberland Avenue, the boundary between Camden District and Darminwei District.”
The attendant walked, meticulously giving directions.
Gu Xi trailed behind, observing the street.
Tall buildings lined both sides of the street; there were no shops, only house numbers, giving off a rather ominous vibe.
Seeing Gu Xi looking around, the attendant quickly pulled him along.
“Don’t look around. This place has a nickname: Big Scotland Yard Street. You wouldn’t want to get yourself in trouble, would you?”
Gu Xi immediately understood: this street was under the jurisdiction of Scotland Yard.
No wonder there were no markings.
However, this location was good; it bordered Scotland Yard’s territory, meaning fewer petty thieves and criminals around.
As Gu Xi was thinking this, his gaze fell on the attendant leading the way.
This guy, supposedly a thief, was freely walking on Greenwich Street.
It seemed Scotland Yard’s deterrent wasn’t that strong after all.
The attendant didn’t know what Gu Xi was thinking. After leading him across the street, they entered the Darminwei District.
Upon entering, Gu Xi noticed a distinct difference from Greenwich Street.
The buildings weren’t as tall, and they looked like apartment buildings.
Between the buildings, there were occasional patches of empty land or dilapidated old buildings.
Since Gu Xi required proximity to the Camden District, the attendant didn’t take him deeper.
He simply pointed out some apartments or plots of land for sale along the street.
“This land is available for exchange. Don’t let its narrow shape fool you; its length is an advantage; it’s quite large, nearly six hundred square meters. Due to its shape, it’s remained unsold. If you want to exchange, three hundred Camden District land purchase permits will easily secure it. As long as the height doesn’t exceed that of the surrounding buildings, you can build as you please. There’s also this small building for sale. See this gate? Once you’re out, you’re directly on Camden District’s main street. It’s right there.”
The attendant wasn’t a real estate agent, so his explanation was a bit stiff, but Gu Xi’s requirements weren’t high: sufficient size and bordering Camden District.
Therefore, Gu Xi quickly found a building for sale that suited him: a three-story building, only five buildings away from Greenwich Street. It looked new, with freshly painted doors. He liked it immediately.
Seeing Gu Xi’s reaction, the attendant was happy to elaborate.
While the owner wasn’t a client of their guild, the guild was currently working on a large deal, and Camden District land permits were the most useful items. Exchanging for this building would be extremely easy.
Just as Gu Xi was about to decide, his gaze suddenly swept outward, pointing to the intersection of Greenwich Street and Northumberland Avenue.
“Wait, what’s going on over there?”
Greenwich Street and Northumberland Avenue met in a T-junction. The location Gu Xi pointed to was a collapsed building.
The building’s original area wasn’t small, about three hundred and twenty square meters, but the collapse left all the building materials strewn on the ground, looking very messy.
The attendant immediately said, “What else could it be? The ownership of this land is unclear. The original owner insists it belongs to Greenwich Street, part of the Camden District. But it’s obviously in the middle of Northumberland Avenue; how could it possibly belong to Camden District? So, the matter has been dragging on.”
Gu Xi looked at the ruins, considering carefully. “If I were to acknowledge its belonging to the Darminwei District, would the price be lower?”
