Chapter 49: The Twisted Mage (Seeking Continued Reading)
Luna’s Frostbite Touch was fairly effective; any contact, regardless of the target’s level, would inflict some degree of impairment.
Gu Xi waited for this precise moment. As Luna froze the shadowy figure, Gu Xi instantly launched a bone spear.
The shadowy figure, momentarily frozen, stiffened. Its shadowy movement ability halted completely, allowing the bone spear to easily pierce its body.
The moment it was struck, the Skeleton Soldiers surrounding Gu Xi immediately swarmed the figure, launching a flurry of stabs and slashes.
The figure, however, leveraged its own power, continuously emitting red beams of light, each blast shattering a Skeleton Soldier.
But the sheer number of Skeleton Soldiers was overwhelming. Even with its considerable strength, it managed to destroy only two or three before succumbing to the relentless assault. It was quickly hacked to pieces by the Skeleton Soldiers.
[Skeleton Soldier (Summon) killed Twisted Mage (Young Man, Level 3). You gained 18 experience points, battle squad gained 1 experience point, Contracted Undead gained 22 experience points, participating summons gained 4 experience points.]
Twisted Mage? What kind of being was this?
Before Gu Xi could ponder the implications, a sound of rapid movement reached him from behind.
Turning, he saw another black-robed man, identical in attire to the slain Twisted Mage, appearing in the apartment building’s courtyard.
This one appeared significantly older, with long white hair spilling from his black hood—hair so greasy it gleamed, clearly unkempt.
Upon reaching the courtyard, his eyes fell upon the shadowy figure, now slain by the Skeleton Soldiers.
His face contorted in rage. “Harry, you killed my son! I will kill you!”
With a pointed finger, he unleashed a red beam of light towards Gu Xi.
Gu Xi’s Skeleton Soldiers swiftly interposed themselves, shielding him from the attack.
However, Gu Xi noticed that the shattered remains of the Skeleton Soldiers were far more pulverized this time.
“Hold him off.”
While issuing the command, Gu Xi hurled bone spears at the opponent, simultaneously reflecting on the need to learn a ranged attack capable of tracking enemies. Relying solely on bone spears was proving unreliable.
At Gu Xi’s command, the Skeleton Soldiers charged.
But this man, like the previously slain Twisted Mage, possessed the ability to transform into a shadow and move at incredible speed.
The Skeleton Soldiers were simply too slow to keep up.
Gu Xi considered freezing the enemy with Luna again, but this opponent reacted even faster than Luna. Even momentary pauses were instantly exploited to evade attacks.
Facing this incredibly fast opponent, Gu Xi knew the Skeleton Soldiers alone were insufficient. He decisively roared, “Luna, wail!”
Luna instantly understood. The moment the man shifted into a shadow and attempted to move, she let out a piercing scream.
The banshee wail activated!
Luna’s shriek resonated, and the shadowy figure, mid-movement, was abruptly expelled from its shadowy form.
As the shadowy effect dissipated, Gu Xi swiftly pointed towards the figure.
Aware of Gu Xi’s ability to launch bone spears, the man rolled to the side.
But Gu Xi merely feigned a spear throw. During the man’s roll, three throwing knives shot from Gu Xi’s left hand.
The knives were faster than the bone spears and could strike their target precisely. Despite the man’s quick roll, one knife found its mark.
He didn’t attempt to remove the knife; instead, he rose and pointed at Gu Xi.
Gu Xi was now out of Skeleton Soldiers carrying shields.
However, a Skeleton Soldier wielding a spear promptly stepped forward, willingly sacrificing itself to block the attack.
Gu Xi seized this opportunity to throw another knife, feigning exhaustion and inviting further attack.
The opponent clearly interpreted Gu Xi’s actions; he charged towards him.
Just as he was about to begin his movement, Gu Xi suddenly produced the Fragmentation Rod, pointing it at the black-robed man.
The sudden appearance of the new weapon startled the man, causing a noticeable delay in his movements.
Gu Xi observed the man standing on a Skeleton Soldier’s corpse. Without hesitation, he triggered a Corpse Explosion.
Boom!
The power of a minor Corpse Explosion is directly proportional to the victim’s life force before death. The small explosion instantly severed the man’s left leg.
The surrounding Skeleton Soldiers immediately pounced, aiming to finish him off.
But what followed stunned Gu Xi. The man raised his right hand, placing a ring inlaid with a large stone in his mouth.
Without any visible action, a scream echoed from the Owl’s Nest Building, a dying shriek even more agonizing than Luna’s banshee wail.
Gu Xi was still gazing towards the building when a stream of blood erupted from it, landing precisely on the black-robed man.
The moment the blood landed, he absorbed it all. To Gu Xi’s astonishment, the man’s severed leg instantly regenerated. His pale hair even turned black, radiating vitality.
Rebirth or resurrection?
Gu Xi was baffled, but he understood. The ring with the large stone had absorbed the blood, restoring the black-robed man to peak condition. All his previous efforts had been in vain.
Faced with this, Gu Xi remained decisive. “Attack! Don’t let him get away.”
Luna instantly appeared behind the man, deploying Frostbite Touch.
But the black-robed man’s combat prowess had clearly reached its peak. The frost barely touched him before vanishing.
Gu Xi no longer hesitated, launching five bone spears while simultaneously charging forward, opting for close-quarters combat this time.
The black-robed man, seeing Gu Xi’s advance, extended his arms, unleashing two red beams of light.
Gu Xi didn’t dodge. Two Skeleton Soldiers jumped forward, exploding in front of him.
Exploiting the distraction, Gu Xi burst toward the black-robed man, bringing the Fragmentation Rod crashing down on his head.
