Chapter 5: The Escapees (Seeking Follows)
Gu Xi, though unsure of the situation behind him, quickly ducked his head. A booming sound followed, and a massive boulder, swinging like a pendulum, crashed into the group of black-robed cultists.
The boulder must have weighed several tons; it was unclear how it was launched. The black-robed cultists at the front were flung aside, over a dozen crushed to death on the spot.
Then, a voice came from behind Gu Xi.
“Over here! Come this way!”
Gu Xi looked up and saw a gaunt young man peeking out from nearby, beckoning frantically.
Gu Xi was curious, but as he hesitated, he heard the sound of the black-robed cultists moving another boulder.
Without further thought, Gu Xi ran towards the young man.
After only two steps, Gu Xi realized the young man was hiding in a passage behind a wall. If the young man hadn’t personally beckoned him, Gu Xi wouldn’t have even noticed the passage.
Without hesitation, Gu Xi approached, and the young man grabbed his hand, pulling him into the passage.
As he was dragged along, Gu Xi noticed the young man’s arms were skin and bones, even bearing several bite marks. The young man showed little reaction, leading the way while activating mechanisms in the wall.
Though he didn’t look back, Gu Xi could hear the wall shifting behind him.
Uncertain what was happening, Gu Xi remained alert, secretly communicating with Luna. If the young man acted suspiciously, she would attack him.
They ran for thirty meters, turning several corners before reaching a small room of about seven or eight square meters.
Upon entering, Gu Xi found four or five men and women inside, all looking thin and weak, sitting listlessly. However, Gu Xi saw anger and killing intent in their eyes.
Looking more closely at their posture, Gu Xi let out a surprised sound.
“You aren’t…”
“Yes, we were in the cell next to yours. I’m Jack, Flea Jack. You dropped your keys to us when you escaped.”
Seeing Gu Xi had discovered them, the young man who had led him explained.
“So it was you. Good you escaped, but why didn’t you leave?”
Seeing fellow prisoners, also inexplicably captured, Gu Xi relaxed slightly. However, he was still puzzled.
From what he’d seen on the way, this small room wasn’t something they dug themselves. If they possessed such engineering skills, they wouldn’t have waited for Gu Xi; they would have escaped centuries ago.
“Oh, those who wanted to leave already escaped. The few of us stayed because we know a secret. Excuse me, sir, are you a professional?”
Jack looked at Gu Xi mysteriously.
“Yes, an Undead Mage.”
As Gu Xi spoke, Luna also peeked out from behind him. Her empty gaze startled everyone present.
Luckily, Jack reacted quickly. He quickly said, “Sir, sir, please don’t misunderstand! We mean you no harm. I kept these people here because we know a secret. That’s why they captured us.”
Hearing this, Gu Xi’s eyes narrowed. He had been imprisoned for so long, almost failing his class advancement, something he hadn’t forgotten.
After successfully advancing, he hadn’t immediately left, wanting to find a chance for revenge. This news excited him.
“What secret?”
“Those guys discovered the Mirror Palace. We’re being used as sacrifices to open the Mirror Gate.”
Jack spoke, proudly looking at Gu Xi, expecting a shocked reaction.
But Gu Xi knew nothing about a Mirror Palace. He only came to this world to become an Undead Mage.
Based on his experience, he only needed to find a suitable undead creature in a graveyard or cemetery as his Contracted Undead to succeed in his class advancement. Then he could leave.
He never bothered to read the world’s background information. Jack’s words were like casting pearls before swine; Gu Xi didn’t understand their significance.
Seeing Gu Xi’s lack of reaction, Jack thought he looked down on the information, and tried to explain further.
“Sir, it’s like this. When I was first imprisoned, my neighbor was an architect. He was desperate to escape and planned to dig a tunnel. I helped him a little, but he made too much noise and was severely injured. If I hadn’t given him water occasionally, he might have died sooner. Later, he told me he discovered unusual bricks while digging, and judging by them, this is the legendary Mirror Palace.”
Jack emphasized “Mirror Palace.”
But Gu Xi truly didn’t understand. He said directly, “What’s wrong with the Mirror Palace?”
Jack realized Gu Xi genuinely didn’t know.
So Jack and the others explained the Mirror Palace to Gu Xi.
The Mirror Palace was a legend in Alierdo City. About three hundred years ago, during the Stuart Dynasty, James I, to gain the throne, sacrificed the entire city of Alierdo City to an unknown entity. But after ascending, he regretted the sacrifice and devised a plan.
He used the Alierdo Tower, the core of Alierdo City, as a starting point, creating an exact replica of Alierdo City, life-sized. He then offered this fake city to the unknown entity, using a mirror-image method to banish the entity and the fake city to another space.
Afterward, this fake city became the backdrop for Alierdo City’s ghost stories and legends. The only certainty in the various true and false legends was the way to enter the banished fake city: through a building diametrically opposite the Alierdo Tower – the never-before-discovered Mirror Palace.
The black-robed cultists were followers of this unknown entity, their goal in capturing Gu Xi and the others was only one: to open the Mirror Palace’s passage to the fake city and release the entity they worshipped.
