Chapter 76: The Might of Death (Seeking Follows and Recommendations)
Just as Gu Xi’s troops were about to collide with the Black Specter forces, a gigantic black eye suddenly appeared atop the border tower.
As the black eye materialized, Gu Xi also noticed the situation on the border tower. A level 5 Specter mage stood at the tower’s peak, transforming himself into flames to propel the black eye’s ascent.
Beside this Specter mage were three Black Specter legions, constantly infusing him with a dark energy.
The black eye the mage raised was the result of their combined efforts.
Although its purpose remained unknown, no one with common sense would believe it was anything good.
“Death Avatar, prepare the Death Dragon’s Breath. Obliterate that eye on the tower and those Specters!”
“Luna, ignore everything else and focus solely on those in the open areas.”
After a quick assessment of the situation, Gu Xi made a decisive decision.
Following Gu Xi’s command, the Death Avatar, in its Bone Dragon form, soared from Gu Xi’s territory.
The aura of an 11-level creature instantly commanded everyone’s attention.
The already contorted face of the Specter mage atop the border tower twisted even further.
He never expected such a turn of events. He had only activated the magical cannon on the border tower; why was he suddenly targeted?
In fact, he didn’t understand that he was targeted precisely because he had been too ostentatious. Such a large eye, and with half the garrison’s forces concentrated there – given that Gu Xi didn’t know its purpose, who else would he target?
After the Death Avatar launched from Gu Xi’s territory, it opened its mouth wide, gathering green energy within its jaws like a laser cannon charging.
The Specter mage on the border tower, disregarding everything else, frantically channeled his dark energy, focusing the eye on the Bone Dragon soaring in the sky.
However, the Bone Dragon’s speed far exceeded normal limits. More importantly, its void effect was exceptionally potent; a single flicker covered vast distances.
Ordinary individuals could not keep up with its movements, much less lock onto its position.
With a few flickers, the Bone Dragon arrived within a hundred meters of the border tower.
Only then did the Specter mage manage to lock onto the Bone Dragon’s position, but he was still a step too slow. As soon as the Bone Dragon reached that point, it opened its mouth and unleashed a blast towards the black eye atop the tower.
A green beam, as thick as a man, shot forth from the Bone Dragon’s maw.
Those nearby seemed to hear countless mournful cries echoing a single phrase:
“Ah… Big Melon…”
The voices overlapped, indistinguishable as male or female. However, those who heard it could sense the absolute certainty of death within the cries; either they would kill their enemy, or be killed.
The green beam directly struck the black eye.
The colossal eye instantly exploded. The Specter mage beneath it was immediately affected, turning into black dust in the blast.
The Death Avatar didn’t retract the beam but swiveled its head, sweeping the green column across the top of the border tower.
All Black Specters touched by the beam vaporized, vanishing from sight.
[Death Avatar (Magical Construct) killed Specter Leader (Level 5), you gained 455 experience points.]
[Death Avatar (Magical Construct) killed Specter (Level 3), you gained 11 experience points.]
[Death Avatar…]
Seeing the continuous stream of messages, a smile appeared on Gu Xi’s face.
The Death Avatar, though appearing as a gigantic Bone Dragon, was actually Gu Xi’s magical construct.
Since the Death Avatar’s level was intrinsically linked to Gu Xi’s, it didn’t gain experience itself. Enemies killed by the Death Avatar yielded experience to Gu Xi, just like Corpse Explosion or Bone Spike spells. This time, Gu Xi had truly struck it rich.
To say nothing of the experience from killing the Specter leader, which belonged entirely to Gu Xi, this alone boosted his experience substantially. If the experience needed to level up from level 3 to 4 weren’t so high, he might have already leveled up.
“Clean up the remaining enemies on the border tower; you don’t need to worry about anything else. Luna, separate the enemy leader from his troops. Skeleton Soldiers advance, Skeleton Archers fire!”
Under Gu Xi’s orders, the Skeleton Soldiers, already nearing a collision with the Black Specters, accelerated.
The Skeleton Soldiers of combat squad 3 raised their shields upon approaching the Black Specters, ready to deliver a shield bash, but at that moment, a wave of arrows from the Skeleton Archers arrived first.
Seven or eight Black Specters charging towards the Skeleton Soldiers were immediately shot down. The remaining ones faltered, their previous momentum gone.
At this moment, the Skeleton Soldiers of combat squad 2 seized the opportunity to advance, their spears held horizontally, thrusting at the Black Specters.
More than a dozen Black Specters were impaled and vanished before the Skeleton Soldiers.
“Kill!”
Seeing this success, Gu Xi knew the battle was secured. The Black Specters were fewer in number and now weaker in combat; there was nothing to fear.
All Skeleton Soldiers surged forward, engaging the Black Specters in melee combat.
During the close-quarters fight, the Black Specters finally displayed their strength. Like the Skeleton Soldiers, they were relentless. Facing the Skeleton Soldiers’ attacks, they didn’t retreat but instead attacked in groups of three or four against a single Skeleton Soldier, sacrificing their lives to eliminate their opponents.
Meanwhile, the Specter leader displayed agility unlike that of a heavily armored defensive soldier. He constantly moved across the battlefield, drawing the attention of the Skeleton Soldiers. Each of his actions saved a Black Specter from death while interrupting the Skeleton Soldiers’ attacks.
Luna, observing from afar, repeatedly tried to intervene, but each time she charged with her Ghostly Spirits, the Specter leader evaded with incredible speed, preventing Luna from capturing him. This cat-and-mouse chase disrupted the Skeleton Soldiers’ battle, transforming it into a chaotic melee.
At this point, Gu Xi noticed another situation: Other Specters from the Pier Warehouse area had discovered the battle and were converging, poised to join the fight at any moment.
