The Wizard: Grinding Experience Starting with Knight Breathing Techniques 37
by adminChapter 0037 [Silent Lady] (Seeking Follows)
Li Wei, though not a stranger to murder, had never killed anyone in his own bedroom before. He stared at the corpse on the floor, removing the crow-billed mask crafted from black metal. The shattered skull rendered the victim unrecognizable.
“What rotten luck, I’ll have to sleep in a different room tomorrow,” he muttered. “But I really don’t know this person. It must be an assassin hired by one of my enemies. The question is, I’m just a teenager, I’ve never offended anyone. Who would send someone to kill me?”
For a moment, Li Wei pondered his life, searching for any reason for this attack.
Eventually, he could only think of two people with possible motives.
One was Pastor Abraham. After all, he had recently refused the church’s advances and hadn’t treated the high and mighty pastor with any respect. He certainly had the means and opportunity to orchestrate this. After all, these people occupied his territory. While he might appear unconcerned, they knew that if he ever grew into someone like a Black Snake Knight, he might reclaim his land. Therefore, they decided to eliminate him, ensuring the Black Snake family’s extinction.
“But if that were the case, why did they let me go in the first place? That doesn’t make sense,” Li Wei murmured to himself.
“Or maybe it was old Abraham, that dog.”
“In any case, besides these two, I shouldn’t have any other conflicts of interest or grudges with anyone else.”
“Could it be the Wild Boar Gang? They robbed me before, now they want to kill me?”
“But the Wild Boar Gang, being an underworld organization, wouldn’t likely hire an assassin. They wouldn’t care about their reputation being tarnished.”
Li Wei paced back and forth in the room, agitated.
“I’ve been so low-profile, so accommodating. Why? Why are they trying to kill me?”
“No, I have to find out who’s trying to harm me. Once I know… if I can beat them, I have to take care of this person. Otherwise, I won’t be able to rest easy.”
His castle was surrounded by high walls, and soldiers patrolled constantly.
For this assassin to infiltrate so easily, their skills must be exceptional, especially in stealth.
With this thought, Li Wei took out a knife and cut open the assassin’s chest. He saw a ghostly, unpredictable black gaseous substance clinging to the assassin’s heart, resembling an octopus with countless capillary-like tendrils rooted in the organ.
“Heh, Life Seed! Sure enough, this person is a full-fledged Knight!”
“To send a full-fledged Knight after me… the mastermind behind this must be significant.” Li Wei’s expression shifted between shadow and light.
As the assassin died, the octopus-shaped Life Seed began to slowly dissipate.
Li Wei watched silently. This was his first time dissecting a full-fledged Knight.
Sure enough, it was similar to his own body; a Life Seed resided in the assassin’s heart.
Only, his Life Seed was serpent-shaped, while this one resembled an octopus.
Li Wei stripped the assassin naked, searching for clues.
Eventually, he found a small booklet in the inner lining of the assassin’s clothes.
The booklet had only a few pages. The cover depicted a shadowy figure, the style dark and eerie.
“In Praise of Shadows.”
Li Wei silently read the title. He opened the booklet.
The content resembled religious texts, extolling a deity named:
The Shadow Master.
“The Shadow Master? Never heard of it,” Li Wei shook his head.
While not countless, the number of deities worshipped in this world was substantial. Besides the Heavenly Father worshipped by the Holy Radiance Church, there was the Earthly Mother of the Earth Church, the Ice Snow Goddess of the Winter Church, the Storm Emperor of the Storm Church, the Eternal Flame of the Eternal Life Church, the Dragon King of the Dragon Church, and the Lord of the Stars of the Star Church. These seven were the deities worshipped by the people of the seven kingdoms.
They were called true gods simply because their respective churches held immense influence in the seven kingdoms, self-proclaiming their status as such.
Besides these seven deities, Li Wei alone knew of the Lord of the Wilderness, worshipped by the Wilderness Brothers Association, the Silent Lady of the Silent Monastery, and the War God, favored by war enthusiasts.
Therefore, Li Wei’s unfamiliarity with the Shadow Master was perfectly normal.
Essentially, the Death Knell’s Voice was a tiny organization; few worshipped the Shadow Master, and their influence hadn’t spread widely.
In the past, Li Wei was indifferent to such faiths, but since confirming the existence of wizards, he discovered that some myths might not be as simple as he’d imagined.
If this world could have wizards wielding supernatural powers, why couldn’t there be even more powerful deities?
Li Wei still respected deities. Though he didn’t believe in them, he respected others’ beliefs, provided they didn’t interfere with his own.
After reading “In Praise of Shadows,” Li Wei found a breathing technique lineage chart on the last page.
The chart was similar to the breathing technique lineage chart he’d previously obtained. However, in the center of the small figures was a turbulent sea, and in the center of the sea, a gigantic sea monster resembling an octopus, similar to the Kraken of European folklore.
“?? Someone carrying around a breathing technique lineage chart?”
Li Wei found this amusing.
Unknown to him, the Sea Demon Breathing Technique was the most common breathing technique among the Death Knell’s Voice members. The organization would give booklets promoting the Shadow Master and containing the Sea Demon Breathing Technique to promising children without inherited breathing techniques. They’d train them in assassination skills from a young age, providing resources to cultivate this technique, ensuring a constant influx of new members.
The Sea Demon Breathing Technique was exceptionally suited for assassination, emphasizing flexibility and agility. Cultivated to the full-fledged Knight level, it could even alter one’s physique through a technique similar to bone-shrinking, and combined with makeup, it could even achieve a complete change of appearance.
In fact, if the illusionary Knight hadn’t been overconfident and too close to Li Wei, caught off guard, even if Li Wei were a full-fledged Knight, killing the illusionary Knight wouldn’t have been so easy.
Li Wei put away “In Praise of Shadows,” along with the crow-billed mask, a rather nice-looking dagger, and other assassination tools.
Li Wei dismembered the useless corpse and threw it into the roaring fireplace. He watched as the body burned, crackling and emitting a pungent smell. Vaguely, Li Wei seemed to see a dancing, eight-tentacled illusion rise from the flames, then gradually vanish. When he focused, only charred bones remained.
“Heh, this breathing technique stuff… it’s truly uncanny.”
Li Wei’s heart remained calm and still.
