The Wizard: Grinding Experience Starting with Knight Breathing Techniques 70
by adminNot long after, the person who wanted to sell Li Wei a Breathing Technique arrived.
“Are you Sir Geralt the White Wolf?” The man was a corpulent, overweight fellow, clearly not a Knight.
“That’s right. Do you have a Breathing Technique for sale?” Li Wei asked.
“Indeed, I have a Breathing Technique here. What price does Sir White Wolf offer?” The fat man said cautiously.
“That depends on the quality of your Breathing Technique. Would you mind letting me have a look?” Li Wei asked.
The fat man nodded, pulling a worn booklet from his bosom. It was covered in dust and grease stains, looking quite dirty. He quickly showed it to Li Wei then immediately put it away.
Although he only glanced at it, Li Wei could confirm that the Breathing Technique was genuine. He saw only nineteen small figures in the illustrations, and the central image appeared to be a bull, indicating a likely strength-type Breathing Technique.
A rudimentary strength-type Breathing Technique, and a particularly poor one at that – about on par with the Giant Bear Breathing Technique.
Li Wei was somewhat disappointed. Even at its peak, this Breathing Technique would offer very limited improvement to his strength.
But with a ‘better than nothing’ attitude, Li Wei decided to buy it.
Seeing Li Wei seemingly sigh, the fat man, fearing Li Wei wouldn’t be interested, said, “Sir Li Wei, this Breathing Technique is the unique property of our Minotaur family. It has great collector’s value, something you, as a Breathing Technique collector, should understand.”
“Twenty gold coins,” Li Wei said flatly.
“Too low,” the fat man muttered. He could sense a terrifying aura emanating from Li Wei, making him incredibly apprehensive from the moment he entered. He himself wasn’t even a Knight, and hadn’t cultivated this ancestral Breathing Technique. He’d been looking for an opportunity to sell it to get money to visit the brothel; the new young girls were driving him crazy.
Li Wei got up to leave; twenty gold coins, or nothing. He didn’t really care for this rudimentary Breathing Technique.
“Alright, twenty gold coins,” the fat man said immediately, his voice pleading, seeing Li Wei about to leave.
The transaction was complete. Li Wei took the Breathing Technique and examined it closely.
“The Wild Bull Breathing Technique. Sounds like one of those common, run-of-the-mill techniques,” Li Wei muttered. The illustrations depicted small figures worshipping a house-sized wild bull as a totem.
As he suspected, it was a rudimentary strength-type Breathing Technique.
“Sigh, Breathing Techniques are still difficult to obtain. I should simply ask around and find out who the real Breathing Technique collectors are in Icewind City. I’ll act as a rogue Zhang San for once,” Li Wei entertained the thought of robbery.
Ultimately, he abandoned the idea. Avoiding unnecessary trouble was one of his principles. Of course, if someone provoked him, that would be a different story.
Li Wei posted a “High reward for Vortex Worm eggs” commission at the Shining Tavern, hoping for a stroke of luck. This coincided with the tavern’s monthly auction.
Li Wei also decided to participate in the auction.
Unexpectedly, some good things did appear at the auction.
For example, a “Silver Scale Breastplate” forged by “The Hammer of Flame,” sold for 500 gold coins. It was said to use a full two pounds of mithril.
“Heh, I’m a master craftsman too. Unfortunately, my reputation hasn’t spread yet. Otherwise, making money would be much easier. No, I need to find a way to market myself, or my skills as a blacksmith will be wasted.”
“Hmm, next time I trade with the Wild Boar Knight, any armor I personally forge must have a price increase. If the Wild Boar doesn’t agree, I’ll just terminate our trade. He’s of no use to me anymore, and this is a good opportunity to deal with him, destroy the Wild Boar Gang, and get Old Toby back,” Li Wei muttered to himself. He’d been nursing this grudge for several years.
At this auction, there was also a rudimentary non-bloodline Breathing Technique: the Giant Rhinoceros Breathing Technique.
This was a strength-type Breathing Technique, auctioned off for a sky-high price of eight hundred gold coins.
Non-bloodline Breathing Techniques, even rudimentary ones, were exceptionally precious. Many great nobles with ancestral bloodline Breathing Techniques would compete to buy them, as they could be used to train subordinates and cultivate their power.
Not to mention the wealthy but bloodline-less nouveau riche who would be clamoring for such items.
Li Wei didn’t participate in the bidding, though he wanted it.
Spending nearly a thousand gold coins for it wasn’t worth it.
He had the Siren Breathing Technique, which was sufficient for training his subordinates. The group of dimwits would be occupied by practicing the Siren Breathing Technique for a lifetime.
In the end, the Giant Rhinoceros Breathing Technique was bought by a masked noble, who left hurriedly after the purchase, clearly worried about being targeted.
Li Wei noticed that shortly after the noble’s departure, several people inconspicuously followed him.
At this, Li Wei’s eyes gleamed.
Since there weren’t any more items he wanted, he left the auction hall.
He guessed those people intended to rob the noble of the Breathing Technique.
“If they succeed, I’ll rob them. If they fail, then so be it; after all, I, Li Wei, am not some great villain.”
Li Wei possessed an extremely flexible moral compass.
Leaving the Shining Tavern, Li Wei silently followed those people.
The noble, once outside, mounted his horse and galloped towards the city gates.
Those with ill intentions quickly followed.
He who possesses treasure invites danger.
If the noble had purchased a bloodline Breathing Technique, like Li Wei had once done, nobody would bother him. But a non-bloodline Breathing Technique was entirely different.
Li Wei, using his speed and agility, followed leisurely from behind.
The strongest among them were only low-level Knights, many not even Knights at all. They were nothing more than insignificant ants to him.
The noble didn’t rush to leave the city, as within the city walls, the Silver Fang Guards of Earl Silver Mountain and the Church’s authority provided deterrence; those people wouldn’t dare cause too much trouble. But outside the city, that would change.
He found an inn and stayed for several days.
Many of those attempting robbery gave up.
A few, however, remained persistent, lingering near the inn for days.
On the second floor of the inn, the noble who obtained the Breathing Technique, his face hidden behind a mask, looked grave.
“I must leave. These people can’t hold back any longer. Although I have the strength of a mid-level Knight, facing so many people is still difficult. Especially that person wearing the white wolf mask at the back. The feeling he gives me is extremely dangerous! It’s the same feeling I had when facing a peak-level Knight!”
“Damn it, this was a mission assigned by the Duke of Black Mountain. If I don’t complete it well, the Duke will certainly be very disappointed,” the middle-aged noble fretted.
At night, Li Wei sat in a small inn, cultivating.
[Black Snake Breathing Technique proficiency +89]
“The Black Snake Breathing Technique is leveling up faster and faster,”
Li Wei muttered to himself.
“I should be able to become a high-level Knight this year.”
“Unfortunately, my Black Snake Elixirs are almost depleted. Where can I find more elixirs? Do I have to go to the Tuva Empire?”
Li Wei had never been to the Tuva Empire. This neighboring country had a poor relationship with the Jade Empire, and he didn’t speak Tuvan, making communication impossible.
“Wait, I have a proficiency panel! If I buy some Tuvan language books, I wonder if I can turn it into a skill and then level it up.”
Although books introducing the Tuvan language were scarce, they weren’t nonexistent.
Just as Li Wei was about to cultivate the Vortex Beast Breathing Technique, a commotion outside caught his attention.
Since mastering “Beginner Vibration Perception,” Li Wei’s perception had become increasingly acute.
He tossed a piece of jerky into his gaping maw, put on his White Wolf mask, stretched, and agilely leaped out of the inn window like a wildcat.
…
Outside the city, the middle-aged noble rode his horse across the wilderness.
Beside him was a wandering Knight.
This was a mercenary he’d recruited at the Shining Tavern to protect him.
Two full-fledged Knights should be enough to escape. As long as the peak-level Knight wearing the White Wolf mask doesn’t intervene.
A cold arrow whizzed through the air, narrowly missing the middle-aged noble.
“Hand over the Breathing Technique, and you can leave,”
More Knights emerged from behind, four in total.
Soon, a fierce battle erupted.
The clang of clashing weapons echoed.
Li Wei hid in the distance, observing the fight.
Initially, with the mercenary’s help, the middle-aged noble could hold his own against the bandits, even gaining the upper hand with his mid-level Knight cultivation.
But soon, the middle-aged noble fell behind.
He had underestimated the allure of the non-bloodline Breathing Technique.
A mid-level Knight wearing a ghost mask also joined the fray.
Seeing he was losing, the middle-aged noble used his final trump card.
“Stop! I am a retainer of the Duke of Black Mountain, acting on his orders. Do you know what it means to attack me?”
The middle-aged noble sneered, revealing his identity.
“Kill him, and who will know it was us?”
These outlaws didn’t care. The Duke of Black Mountain was powerful, but they weren’t his vassals. Wandering Knights feared nothing!
“You?!”
Suddenly, a volley of arrows whistled through the air!
A piercing sound.
The middle-aged noble stared incredulously at the arrow piercing his heart. He turned his head towards the direction of the arrow.
The White Wolf mask slowly appeared—it was Li Wei.
The middle-aged noble slowly fell, his eyes filled with resentment.
The other bandits rushed forward to seize the Breathing Technique.
Li Wei continued to draw and release his arrows.
Bang, bang, bang!
Arrow after arrow.
Under Li Wei’s unerring archery, all but the fully-armored, official Knights were defenseless.
Those who coveted the Breathing Technique died the quickest.
Soon, only a handful remained alive.
“Who are you?”
The mid-level Knight with the ghost mask, under the moonlight, charged towards Li Wei.
Li Wei drew Frost’s Sorrow!
Frost Wolf Breed, acceleration!
Ripples tore through the void!
Ripple Slash!
Giant Bear Breed burst!
Crack!
The ghost mask’s long sword was severed, Frost’s Sorrow’s momentum unabated, slicing through the opponent’s chainmail.
Li Wei roared, cleaving the mid-level Knight in two!
A one-sided massacre.
Soon, only Li Wei and the dying middle-aged noble remained alive.
“You’re a man of the Duke of Black Mountain?” Li Wei asked.
“That’s right…you…you dare attack a retainer of the Duke of Black Mountain…” the middle-aged noble said weakly, gazing at Li Wei. His heart was pierced, he wouldn’t live much longer.
A piercing sound.
Frost’s Sorrow pierced his skull.
Li Wei withdrew his sword, “You were the one I was killing.”
He quickly cleaned up the battlefield. On the middle-aged noble’s body, he found the Giant Rhinoceros Breathing Technique, along with over three hundred gold coins, and an ancient parchment that didn’t seem like a Breathing Technique lineage chart. It depicted various complex hand seals.
“Spirit-Driving Manual.”
Li Wei quickly scanned it, his breathing quickening.
“This is the real surprise!!!”
