    Chapter 46: Steel Wings Unfurled!

The tremor lasted over thirty seconds.

“Was that really an earthquake?” a burly military officer asked, bewildered.

A female officer, clutching a push-to-talk button on her radio, listened intently for a while before exclaiming excitedly, “The psionics are retreating! Listen!”

Wang Jixuan’s ears twitched slightly, managing to make out what was being said.

“Quick, get out of here! It’s the cyborgs from the front lines!”

“Damn it! Kong Nu, that bastard, made us fight those monsters!”

“Retreat! Everyone retreat! Back to the Upper City! Getting caught in her sights is a death sentence! Go, go, go! Let those C-class psionics handle it!”

“Watch out for her laser cannon… buzz—”

The radio erupted in a deafening screech, causing the entire fortress to tremble slightly again.

Wang Jixuan and his four companions exchanged bewildered glances.

    *Hiss.*

A calm voice, belonging to Ling Tong, simultaneously echoed in their earphones:

    “Elevator 7 is now accessible.

“Seven or eight psionics escaped; they used a passage far from your location. There are three remaining C-class psionics here. They’re currently under fire suppression and will be eliminated shortly.

“Your small team performed well, eliminating five psionics with minimal firepower.

“Please descend immediately to regroup and assist me with the investigation and evidence gathering.”

    Wang Jixuan: …

    He inexplicably felt insulted.

    He didn’t know why.

    Finally, they boarded the elevator;

Though it wasn’t the luxurious, comfortable, and free central elevator.

The spacious Elevator 7 had three rows of benches inside, along with various safety and explosion-proof devices, allowing them to sit comfortably.

The elevators in the fortress were like buses in the Golden Age human cities.

When Wang Jixuan and his team reached the 45th floor of the fortress, hundreds of security officers in light blue uniforms had already gathered, guarding the common passage to the 46th floor.

This was the usual route for the ‘dignitaries’ of the Middle and Upper Cities to reach the Pleasure District. There was a makeshift inter-floor hydraulic elevator, but it had been destroyed. Several burning handmade cars littered the spiraling highway below, along with scattered human body parts.

Clearly, a fierce battle had erupted here.

Wang Jixuan and Zhou Zhengde were both wearing security officer uniforms, which proved extremely convenient.

After a brief exchange, the five of them, carrying their weapons and equipment, easily passed through the security checkpoint and entered the 46th-floor central area.

    Light.

    A lot of light.

Almost all light sources within the Pleasure District were switched on. Gunfire from gang fights echoed in the distance. A dense plume of smoke rose from one area of the Pleasure District, and vehicles carrying gang members were continuously fleeing the scene.

Just as Wang Jixuan led his five-man team a few steps, a tremendous roar came from below, followed by a small mushroom cloud slowly rising.

Because the interior of the fortress was semi-enclosed, the shockwave from the explosion transformed into a wave of heat, which still retained some warmth when it washed over Wang Jixuan and his team.

Immediately after, a purple laser beam suddenly appeared, striking directly at an upward slant, burning a crimson area on the ‘metal ceiling’ above.

    “Good heavens…”

    Zhou Zhengde swallowed hard:

“This… how do we make this battle compliant?”

Wang Jixuan thought for a moment: “The psionic violated regulations by using heavy firepower.”

Zhou Zhengde snapped his fingers: “Exactly!”

Ling Tong’s voice came through the earphones: “Please bring over the second equipment box, thank you. It contains specialized equipment for hunting psionics.”

    “Okay.”

Wang Jixuan responded, running while forming a sword-finger gesture with both hands. Eight Swift Movement Talismans once again flew out and adhered to the outer sides of Zhou Zhengde and the other three’s thighs.

He pointed his sword finger forward, and the speed of the five-man team increased again.

To ensure the talismans weren’t exposed, the last bit of spiritual energy in these talismans Wang Jixuan lent out would be used for self-immolation.

Wang Jixuan had seriously considered this issue.

The reason he could defeat D-class psionics while still at the Qi Refinement stage was essentially because he mastered numerous spells, techniques, talismans, and formations—cultivator ‘skills’.

    This was his unique advantage.

Psionics have a large amount of Qi within their bodies, and this Qi can be activated by incantations.

In other words, if his incantations were learned by the opponent, the opponent could easily master the method of utilizing their own Qi, thus greatly increasing their strength.

Of course, mottled Qi affects the power of spells.

Daoist Wang felt that he was now at odds with the Thirteenth Institute, and this Thirteenth Institute… didn’t seem like good people…

Even Zheng Shiduo, Wang Jixuan didn’t trust him at all for the moment.

Therefore, he wouldn’t teach anyone his incantations, talismans, and other abilities, even if he were captured and dissected by the Thirteenth Institute, not until he reached the peak of his cultivation again.

If he could reach the peak of his cultivation and ascend, then eliminating the rampant demonic beasts in this world, and leaving behind some non-sect-related talismans, techniques, incantations, formations, and his own cultivation methods, wouldn’t be impossible.

Techniques aren’t lightly passed on, simply because the goodness and evil of living beings are uncertain.

These were just Wang Jixuan’s own thoughts. As for how to ensure that the things he left behind were used for the right purpose, he hadn’t thought about it yet.

Of course, he was more inclined to… leave nothing behind.

    He wasn’t here to preach.

His thoughts subtly shifting, Wang Jixuan and his four companions had already reached the vicinity of the explosion zone.

Ling Tong’s voice sounded again: “Team Leader Mu, find a level area and place the box flat according to the markings.”

“Understood,” Wang Jixuan jumped onto a nearby low building.

Zhou Zhengde shouted, “Let’s go support the front,” and led his four team members forward at high speed.

Wang Jixuan fiddled with the metal box, and soon heard the sound of its engine running, accompanied by a “hiss” of air release. The upper panel of the box automatically rose, and from within it flew out metal tubes that were extending, crashing towards a karaoke bar 300 meters away.

Bright lights were constantly flashing inside the karaoke bar. Wang Jixuan could barely see several figures moving back and forth.

    Then what?

Wang Jixuan was clueless. He heard Zheng Shiduo’s clamor in his headset.

“It’s okay, it’s okay! No need to rush! Leave it to our battle maidens! Come over here! Look what I got! Woohoo! This industrial fortress is incredibly rich!”

    Daoist Wang was somewhat puzzled.

The metal box in front of him automatically closed, so he picked it up again and in a few leaps, landed on a rooftop outside the karaoke bar where the fighting was taking place.

A short while later, Wang Jixuan had several black lines on his forehead.

On the rooftop a few dozen meters away, Zheng Shiduo had somehow moved several huge speakers, and had even held several gang members hostage to adjust them, and they were just now finished.

    “Some music, some upbeat music!”

“Soldiers! It’s time to do our job! Team Leader Mu! Team Leader Mu, aren’t you coming? Fine, Captain Zhou, come join… Haha! Right! Two glow sticks each, line up single file, face the battlefield, and move to the rhythm! Arch your butts, you gotta arch your butts, make the glow sticks cross and circle, one, two, three, four, change direction, do it again! That’s it! We are making a huge contribution to this battle!”

Under the psionic’s instructions, five figures lined up in front of the speaker wall, spotlights were shone on them, and they began to move uniformly.

    Wang Jixuan: …

He was about to make a sarcastic comment, reminding them that there were still several powerful psionics to deal with, when a loud bang suddenly came from the karaoke bar.

The roof of the karaoke bar suddenly collapsed, and a figure shot straight up.

    It was Ling Tong!

Wang Jixuan instinctively crouched down, his eyes fixed on Ling Tong’s figure, his hand gripping the sniper rifle.

A pair of steel wings appeared on Ling Tong’s back. Her left mechanical arm pierced the chest of a man covered in brown, long hair, pinning the man’s corpse to the ceiling above, creating a shallow shockwave.

The ‘steel pipes’ that had flown out earlier had extended into ‘metal plates,’ forming these steel wings.

Ling Tong retracted her left arm, letting the corpse fall freely, and looked down.

On the collapsed roof of the karaoke bar, two scarred psionics looked up at Ling Tong angrily.

Ling Tong slowly turned around, her loose hair flowing behind her. The halo around her steel wings constantly flickered, and her exquisite face even had a hint of sanctity.

    A cold sanctity.

The two figures below jumped simultaneously!

Ling Tong tilted her head slightly, raising her right mechanical arm slightly, her five fingers spread open.

    *Bang!*

    The steel wings fully unfolded!

    The next instant!

Dense iron feathers rained down like arrows, and Wang Jixuan’s eyes reflected a sea of burning iron rain!

The piercing shriek of extremely fast projectiles and the sound of dense explosions drowned out the music from the speakers.

The four members of Zhou Zhengde’s squad, who were doing the la la dance, covered their ears and crouched down, only Zheng Shiduo was still shouting and laughing wildly.

The karaoke bar was instantly filled with the bright light of the explosions, and the building rapidly collapsed, burying the two ‘precious’ C-class psionics.

Ling Tong’s voice echoed in their ears, calm and unemotional:

    “Clean-up complete.”

    Amazing!

Without cultivating Qi, condensing souls, or gathering spirits, she could master so many weapons through skillful techniques alone!

Wang Jixuan’s Dao heart was also shaken by this sight.

He began to understand what allowed humanity in this world to survive the tenacious onslaught of blade beasts.

    Science and firepower!

Daoist Wang wasn’t sure how to classify the battle maiden’s combat power, but he felt that this firepower system was quite good; psionics were actually quite inferior in comparison.

This was also because he did indeed somewhat look down on psionics…

Ling Tong descended, her wings retracting automatically. The ‘plates’ rolled back into steel pipes, trailing flames as they sped towards Wang Jixuan.

Wang Jixuan understood and immediately laid the metal box flat. The box automatically opened, spraying a thick white mist to clean and cool the steel pipes.

The halo under Ling Tong’s elbow went out.

She landed beside Wang Jixuan, and then… stumbled.

Wang Jixuan acted quickly, reaching out to support Ling Tong’s mechanical arm.

The mechanical arm was hot, but it wasn’t a major problem.

Ling Tong had a few beads of cold sweat on her forehead, and she frowned slightly in pain and let out a soft hum.

    “Are you injured?”

Wang Jixuan glanced at his teammates; they had also noticed Ling Tong’s unusual state and hurriedly rushed over.

    “No.”

Ling Tong quickly recovered, saying softly:

“That’s why I’m on leave. During a previous battle with blade beasts, I suffered a mental attack from a general-level blade beast.”

She stood up straight, her posture still elegant and upright.

Wang Jixuan carefully released her arm, exclaiming, “You are strong.”

“My strength comes from my logistical support team,” Ling Tong said softly, “I’m just a driver and operator, part of the team.”

“I’m talking about your willpower,” Wang Jixuan added.

Zheng Shiduo floated over, arriving first.

    “Ling Tong, are you okay?”

    “I’m fine.”

“Should we continue to operate separately?”

    Zheng Shiduo offered a suggestion:

“If you’re worried, let Zhou Zhengde and Mu Liang follow me. You can investigate and collect evidence here. We’ve made such a big commotion, Kong Nu is probably trying to escape!”

Ling Tong asked, “Captain Zheng, do you think I’m lacking in intelligence?”

“Not at all, you’ve been incredibly smart since you were a child.”

“I will not allow you, representing Professor Zhuang, to act alone.”

    Ling Tong said calmly:

“My investigation of Kong Nu is merely a process.”

Zhou Zhengde and the others were still taking a detour below.

Zheng Shiduo paused, sighed, and said: “I knew it, you’re actually investigating Professor Zhuang. Kong Nu, that trash, isn’t a big deal. Every stratum has its own struggles, it’s really disgusting!”

“If Kong Nu tries to escape by plane, he’ll be shot down by the defense forces.

“Our current mission is to enter the forty-ninth floor.”

Ling Tong raised her left arm, and two small modules rose from it, displaying a simple projection screen.

“Good, I have obtained command of the cleanup forces here…”

Zheng Shiduo pursed his lips slightly, his head bowed as if in thought. When he looked up, his eyes gleamed emerald green as he looked at the back of Ling Tong’s head.

The abilities of balanced psionics are quite comprehensive; the mental shock and sleep induction techniques used by the Blade Beast Society are also known to balanced psionics…

    Suddenly.

A figure turned behind Ling Tong, and those pale gold eyes intercepted Zheng Shiduo’s gaze, their eyes meeting.
